Peacefully at his home with family by his side on Monday, December 28, 2020, John “Frank” McDougall of Haileybury passed away at the age of 89. Loving husband of Norma McDougall (nee Melanson). Beloved father of Kevin (Shelley) McDougall of Cambridge and Karen McDougall of Haileybury. Survived by his grandchildren Morgan, Hannah and Sarah.
Frank was a wonderful, kind and gentle man, loving husband, proud father and grandfather. His life was devoted to his family, giving them a safe and peaceful home to grow up in.
Frank grew up in Cobalt, he went to St. Pat’s School, where he forged many lifelong friendships. He enjoyed playing street hockey in the winter months, fishing and picking blueberries in the summer. In his teenage years, he moved to Oshawa with his parents. His passion for hockey would eventually lead him to coaching minor hockey there for several years.
He started his career as an accountant in Oshawa, he moved back up north in 1976 and would work the rest of his accounting career at H. Sutcliff Ltd. in New Liskeard.
He was a proud father, and enjoyed watching his kids playing sports as they grew up, he never missed a game. He loved to take his family fishing up Lady Evelyn and to Portage Bay. He was a huge fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and he loved to watch NFL Football. The Superbowl was a yearly event in his house with his family and friends. He enjoyed all sports, he was often curling in bonspiels, watching the Haileybury 54’s play, or on a ball field coaching local kids play baseball.
Once retired from accounting, he decided he wanted to go back into the work force, so he started work at Wal-mart in New Liskeard as the maintenance man. Many probably remember his smiling face from his 8+ years there. After he retired from there, people had got so used to seeing him there, they would ask him for his help to find something, and even though he didn’t work there anymore, he would still gladly help them in any way.
He was an avid gardener, and planted a vegetable garden every year. He enjoyed being outdoors, he would often go catch his own minnows at his secret spots. He was a lover of nature, and enjoyed feeding the birds in his yard. His greatest pride was his wife of 55 years of marriage, his children and grandchildren. His simple and humble nature will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Cremation has taken place at Lakeview Crematorium, Haileybury. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Buffam Leveille Funeral Home, Haileybury, 705-672-3122. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the foundation of your choice. Online condolences accepted at www.buffamleveille.com.
