John Edward (Ted) Oakley
JOHN EDWARD (TED) OAKLEY
July 16, 1934 – February 12, 2020
Peacefully and unexpectedly, after a short battle with cancer, we lost an amazing husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Dad, you gave us more than a family could expect. You gave us undivided love, you did not judge us through our ups and downs. We always knew you were there for us.
You leave behind your loving wife Gerri of sixty three years, you tended to her care the last few years showing unconditional love. She will miss you. You truly will be missed by your children: Dawn, Clint (Susan), Gary (Monique), Chris (Linda), Tom (Jane), Jennifer (Jason). Grandchildren: Sarah (Travis), Jessica (Kyle), Ted (Amy), Jamie (Tyree), Christine, Jenna, Tehgan, Samantha, Troy, Shane, Trevor, Aryn, Mya, Kara (Josh), Katlyn. Great grandchildren: Nixon and Ayla. Sister, Lynne (Les), sister in-laws: Rita (Garrie), Lenore, Pat (Al), brother in-law Doug (Janice) and numerous nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his Mother Bertha, Father Alfred, brother Donald, sister-in-law Jeanine, Mother and Father in-laws George and Helen Foley and brother-in-law John Foley.
Ted and Gerri, bought their permanent home on Harold Ave. in Transcona in 1963, where they lived until health issues made it necessary to move into Devonshire House. It was a home full of love and memories. Ted was a very hard worker, working his way up and becoming branch manager at W. G. McMahon Canada. He retired in 1993.
Dad had a huge passion for sports, especially hockey and golf. He enjoyed watching his sons, granddaughters and grandsons play. He loved to watch the Jets and showed much frustration when they did not play well. He was an avid golfer, a member at the Transcona Golf Course for many years where he played every weekday morning with his group of golfing buddies. Dad and Mom spent many summers at their cottage in Victoria Beach where he shared so many good times with his family and friends. Every event deserved a party. It was his happy place.
We wish to thank everyone for your kindness and support in helping us get through this difficult time. A special thank you to his friends and staff at Devonshire House. Thank you for keeping an eye on him for us. We truly appreciate it.
A celebration of our Dad’s (Ted’s) life will take place on Thursday, February 20th, 2020 at the Transcona Golf Club, 2120 Dugald Road, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date.
Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, a donation may be made in Dad’s honour to a charity of your choice.
