Obituary
After a courageous second battle with cancer our generous, kind, strong, resilient, compassionate mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend will be reunited in heaven with her husband of 43 years Danny and her parents Joseph and Marjorie (Buote) Murtagh. Joanne faced many challenges over the last few years having a feeding tube, a tracheotomy, radiation, and the loss of speech with no complaints and a quiet strength. She passed away peacefully at home in Upper Golden Grove with the assistance of MAID surrounded by her loved ones. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughters Denise (James), Lisa (Chris), Danni (Kevin), Darcie (Chris) and her grandchildren, Baylee, Sydnee, Shaylee, Emileigh, Grayce, Thornton, Kayson, Nate, Mya and Danica and her great granddaughter Charleigh. Left with many fond memories are her sister and best friend Linda (Kevin) and her brothers David (Debby), Kevin and many extended family and friends. Family was her source of light and happiness.
For many years Joanne was a stay-at-home mother that enjoyed caring for her children and the neighborhood kids. She was a Brownie leader, a Sunday school teacher, and a fantastic role model for her daughters. While her children were growing up, their yard was the place to play and she passed out many homemade popsicles over the years and was adamant the sticks be returned. She enjoyed keeping a clean house and tried to instill that in her daughters. She was a staple at McAllister Place having worked for the Holder family at Hallmark and the Calendar Club for 25 years. She was a hard worker who truly enjoyed interacting with her customers. Lots of great memories were made on the Island. She started visiting PEI as a small child to see her aunts and cousins and continued that tradition with her daughters and grandchildren. She cherished the time with her PEI family.
Joanne loved to travel with her sister Linda some of her favorite destinations being Iceland, Las Vegas, Bahamas, and Costa Rica. They had many adventures over the years bobsledding, zip lining, white water rafting, a submarine ride, parasailing, swimming with sting rays and sharks, horseback riding on the beach and gambling at any casino they could find, even one in Austria. Some of her interests were collecting sea glass, completing puzzles, watching true crime mysteries and the history channel, attending concerts and spending Saturday mornings scouring yard sales for the deal of the day. Horses were a part of her life for many years starting from a young age. She was always ready for an adventure.
Although our hearts are broken, and we will miss her forever, we are thankful that she is no longer in pain and at peace. Our family wishes to send a special thank you to her care team for their continued support throughout this journey. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) As per Joanne’s wishes, a private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
