Obituary of Joan Marlene Bone
We are saddened to announce that Mrs. Joan Marlene Bone (nee Shires), peacefully and with family members by her side, passed away at the age of 88 at Hastings Manor in Belleville, on October 25, 2020. She became very close with her Hastings Manor Family and we are forever grateful for the compassion and care she received there.
Joan was born August 17, 1932 in Prince Edward County, the first daughter of Kathleen (Kay) Casista, (nee Gorman) who later welcomed Joan’s two siblings Jeannie and Sandra.
Joan loved to dance, especially the jitterbug. She shared her passion with partner Doug during long nights hopping and bopping to the sounds of their favourite big bands on the dance floor of the Club Commodore. On June 16, 1951 she married Doug at St. Michael’s Church, Belleville. Together they had five children.
Not content with the duties of a full-time mom and homemaker, Joan showed her entrepreneurial spirit by operating an in-home typing service she called “Speedy Steno.” She provided efficient transcription, typing and copying services to a variety of commercial clients.
Over the years, Joan worked at a wide variety of jobs, from furniture sales to office administration to her other entrepreneurial venture, “Joan’s Cooking and Baking Supplies.” Prior to retirement, she worked in the offices of the Canadian Hearing Society where she took courses and became quite proficient in American Sign Language in order to better serve clients. Joan volunteered with the Avia retirees for many years to give back to her community.
Following the death of her husband, Doug in 1986, Joan engaged in one of her passions; travel. Joan navigated extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe.
Spending time with her adult children and grandchildren became her greatest joy and her happiest recollections were of the special times she spent with them, especially the after school reading club sessions she held with daughter Christine and grandchildren Henry, George, MacKenzie, Skylar and Desmond. Her visits to Uxbridge to see Jessica, Doug and Lucy were as happy as their frequent journeys to G-ma’s house where they were taught the art of cooking “goop mélange” and – although less frequent – she treasured her visits with granddaughters Hayley and Jacqueline, and step-grandchildren Adam and Isaac, whether they came to see her, or she travelled to see them in Nova Scotia.
Joan is survived by her sister, Jeannie (Patricia); children; Christine, Steven (Lynette), Daniel (Marsha), Cathy (Jeff – deceased), and Mary (Phil); grandchildren Jessica, Douglas (Leanne), Lucy (Bronson), Henry (Sarah), George, MacKenzie, Skylar, Desmond, Hayley (Jessica) and Jackie; step-grandchildren Adam and Isaac; great-grandchildren Gavin, Tyson and Ronnie and nephew Christopher (Leah), great nephews James and Henry. She was pre-deceased by husband Doug and sister Sandra (Norm).
