Joan Miller
May 22, 1929 — September 7, 2020
Joan died peacefully and surrounded by family at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital in Picton, Ontario, aged 91, after a short illness. She is survived by her best friend and husband of 71 years, Jack, her son Bruce (Colleen Mayo-Pankhurst), her grandchildren Erik (Emma Eaton), Christopher (Tobi Baker), and Kai (Judy Booth), their mother, Martha Mason Miller, great-grandchildren, Robin, Lachlan, and a great-grandson soon to arrive.
Joan was born and raised in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and began her study of pharmacy there in 1946. She went on to practise community and hospital pharmacy for 51 years in Australia, the UK and Canada. She furthered her academic studies in Canada and completed an M.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Toronto in 1966. She later had a twenty-year teaching career at Humber College where her greatest achievement was to found (over considerable opposition) the first pharmacy technicians’ program in Ontario which she ran until her retirement from teaching.
Joan’s greatest love outside work was the kitchen where, to the constant delight of family, friends and associates, she was a renowned cook who shared an innate sense of chemistry and profound knowledge and experience to create countless memorable meals for all.
Joan was very active outdoors. With Jack, she was an enthusiastic rock- and mountain-climber, hiker and birder. At home, she kept ornamental and vegetable gardens. In the city, she enjoyed opera, theatre and the arts. In all their activities, she and Jack were the closest companions. Joan also had an immense breadth of knowledge and was a fearless advocate, especially for those she loved. She is missed by us all.
We extend our warmest thanks to Dr. Jenna Webber, and to the caring and compassionate nursing staff at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital who all worked hard to make Mother’s passing so peaceful.
