Jessie Maude West
1923-2020
It is with saddened hearts that family and friends have
learned that Aunt Jessie has come to the end of her life. She had been
blessed with good health, thoroughly enjoyed her working career, her
independence and willingly accepted old age. She felt life had been
good to her and she was ready to join her loved ones who had gone on
before her. Jessie Maude West, age 97, of Berwick, formerly of
Cambridge and Halifax, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2020 in
Grand View Manor Berwick but not before she penned her own obituary.
Born on June 19, 1923, she was a daughter of the late George L. and
Edith G. (Sawler) West of Grafton, Kings County. Jessie attended the
local school, Kings County Academy and Mack Business College. After
ten years of office work in the Valley, she moved to Halifax to work
for Citadel Motors where she received the General Motors Accountants
Certificate of Membership. When the company sold, she accepted the
position of Branch Accountant with Montreal Trust, retiring in 1988
after 28 years of service. In 2005, she returned to the Valley and
resided at Camro Place, Cambridge. Jessie was the last surviving
member of her immediate family, having been predeceased by brothers,
Bronson, Garnet and James; sisters, Cora Roscoe, Ruth Hamilton and
Betty Finnigan. She was also predeceased by sister-in-law, Greta West.
She is survived by brother-in-law, Kenneth Finnigan; sixteen nieces
and nephews; many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. A special
thank you to nephew, Kenneth Roscoe and niece, Cathy Foley for their
love and concern over the years. Jessie enjoyed travelling and crossed
Canada many times She had various tours overseas with friends, the
highlight being in 1990 when she attended the Passion Play at
Oberammergau, chipped a souvenir from the Berlin Wall, visited the
Monastery of the Black Madonna, Auschwitz Concentration Camp and the
old historian city, Krakow, which was once the capital of Poland.
Jessie was a member of the First Baptist Church, Halifax, where she
attended regularly and took part in many activities including the
U.B.W. Missionary Society and Women’s Auxiliary. She was an
avid baseball player and was inducted into the Berwick Sports Hall of
Fame. There will be no visitation, by request. A private funeral
service will be held in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville,
Reverend Tim McFarland officiating. A video webcast of the service
will be available at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20, 2020. Due to
COVID-19 restrictions, physical distancing and masks are required.
Interment will be held in the Berwick Cemetery. The family would like
to thank the staff of both Grand View Manor and Valley Regional
Hospital as well as Dr. Chris McKay and Dr. Melissa Broaders for their
support, care, and kindness. Donations in memory may be made to The
War Amps or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, Kentville.
