J David Dave Marchand 2020

It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that the family of J. David “Dave” Marchand announce his passing after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer on Monday, January 13, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 25, 1941, in Louisdale, he was the son of the late William “Willie” and Obeline “Beline” (Sampson) Marchand.
Dave is survived by his wife of 51 years, the love of his life, Flora (Rossetti); sons, Robert (Amy) and Glen (Patricia), both of Eastern Passage; grandchildren, Boyd, Mikaela and Jasmine; sister, Zelia Marchand, Sydney; sister-in-law, Nicki (Bob) Walker, Sydney; brother-in-law, Peter (Cedie) Rossetti, East Bay; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Dave was predeceased by his brother, Francis; sisters-in-law, Roberta Bagnall and Patricia McKinnon; and brother-in-law, Philip Rossetti.
After completing his education, he was first employed at Lee and Martin Chartered Accountants in Sydney. Dave started his career in Healthcare Management at the Glace Bay Community Hospital in 1968, becoming Administrator/CEO in 1970. He retired from that position in 1995. After his retirement, he kept busy through many endeavours. Dave served for a number of years on the Board of Directors at the MacGillivray Guest Home, holding the position of Chairman from 2014 – 2019. He also volunteered for over ten years on the committee that put on the Royal Canadian Legion Bantam AAA Hockey Tournament. Dave’s greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his grandchildren, whether watching them play sports, hearing about their school days or playing with them. He was so proud of them all. Dave’s other great joy was his summers spent at the trailer with his loving wife at the Seal Island Campground and later, at Joyful Journeys Campground in St. Ann’s. He enjoyed the simple joys of a campfire with friends, listening to music and entertaining friends and family. Dave made so many close friends over the years that he considered them his extended family.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 17 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church on Saturday, January 18 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
