Obituary
Heaven opened its doors today as we had to say our final goodbyes to our Dad, Imre Batiz, who was 93 years old when he passed away. He was born in Balkany, Hungary on October 6, 1927 to the late Marton and Maria (Farkas) Batiz and was the loving husband to late wife Rita (King) Batiz.
Dad immigrated to Canada to escape the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, leaving behind a wife and an infant daughter to protect them. He was a very successful businessman who started in Canada with nothing. His career as a tailor was his passion. He absolutely loved what he did and was exceptional at it.
Dad made his children many outfits, as well as a few for Mom and most of the suits he wore, were all tailor made by him. After working for Scovil Bros. as a tailor for many years, he finally took the leap which he worked so hard for, saved, went without, and opened his own business in Saint John, NB, “James Menswear and Tailoring” on Union Street. Dad moved his business on a few occasions, before deciding to stay on the corner of Waterloo and Peters St. After retiring and closing up shop, Dad continued working from home. Tailoring was an important aspect of his life and Dad did it into his late 80’s until his eyes and his steady hands could no longer do the work.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter; he loved to bowl, go for walks, swim, garden, go boating, watch all sports – especially hockey and soccer. Mom and Dad loved to dance – jive was their favorite. Dad was quite a storyteller and his exceptional life experiences he had were much more than the average person would be able to have the opportunity to hear about or talk about. Dad enjoyed travelling to Hungary over the years and seeing all the family he still had there. Dad was very passionate about his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Never a time went by when talking to Dad, that he would not always ask about them. He attended many events with them and enjoyed them to the absolute fullest! Dad was also a fantastic cook. He made many dishes including soups, goulash and sweets from his homeland. He loved to make his own sausages, homemade beer, wine and yes, the occasional moonshine.
Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family, but he leaves behind to miss him his children, Aniko (Ferencné Pántler) Batiz, James (Jill Anderson-Batiz) Batiz, Maria (Daren Langlais) Shaw, Éva (Trevor MacLaren) Batiz and step daughter, Kathy (Wayne) Gallant; 7 grandchildren, Jeremy, Jonathan, Jaclyn, Mindy, Keith, Jillian and Kate; 3 great grandchildren, Keira, Leah and Easton; as well as several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, Márton and Mária, he was predeceased by his siblings, Márton, Mihály, Sándor, János, József, István and Mária.
Dad, you can rest easy now. Your journey on earth has left a great legacy. Give Mom an extra big hug and kiss, tell her how much we love and miss her.
Dad’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. A.N Kristofferson, Nurses and Staff of Rocmaura Nursing Home for the care and compassion that they have shown to Dad during his time there.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). A Celebration of his Life will be organized in the Spring. For those who wish, memorial donations in James’ memory to charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by his family.
