ICHIKAWA
Our family is saddened to announce the death of LORITA R. ICHIKAWA, wife of Akira and mother of Andrew David (Tahirih Rempel) and Maya Yurii (Marko Hilgersom), all of Lethbridge. Lorita died unexpectedly March 28 at the Chinook Regional Hospital. She was 79.
Lorita
was predeceased by her son, Michael Tatsuya in 1976. Besides her husband and
children, she also is survived by six grandchildren she doted on: Kai, Asha and
Akeo Ichikawa; and Sam, Lily and Seiji Hilgersom; a sister, Carmen Tillman,
Seattle; and many cousins, nieces and nephews in the Seattle area. She was also
predeceased by her parents, father Marcos Delma and mother Elvina (Goodmonson)
Delma; and siblings Mack Jr., Dolores, David, Nadine and Valerie
Lorita
was born June 29. 1940, in Seattle, WA.
She was graduated from Garfield High School (Seattle) in 1958. She earned her B.A. degree from the
University of Washington in 1962 and her Master’s Degree from the University of
Minnesota in 1968.
Lorita
moved with Akira to Lethbridge in 1968 where he assumed an academic position at
the new University of Lethbridge. With her
education psychology background, Lorita began working at the old CPCD (Centre
for Personal and Community Development) in 1978. CPCD was merged in 1983 into
Lethbridge Family Services where she was executive director until 1990.
Thereafter, she was employed as a psychologist
at Alberta Health Services (AHS) and was seconded as team coordinator, Taber
Response Project, in 2001. In 2002, she
was asked to be one of several directors for the Children’s Mental Health
program in Edmonton through the Government of Alberta. She returned to Lethbridge and continued
working with AHS until her retirement in 2005. During this period, she
successfully overcame breast cancer. Also
in 2005, she received her highly-valued Canadian citizenship.
Due to restrictions because of COVID-19, a memorial service will be held at a later date. An announcement will be made when a date is set. The family requests no flowers or koden. Those wishing to make donations in her memory may do so to the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta, 470 40th St. S., Lethbridge AB T1J 3Z5 or a charity of their choice.
