Obituary of Hugh Morrison, New Waterford
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Hugh Morrison on the 3rd of May, 2020 at his recent home Parkland, in Sydney, NS. Hugh Morrison, or Hughie, was a lover of cars, boats and anything mechanical. His favourite time of year was when the new cars came to the dealerships and he could do his review of the new offerings. In his younger years he could be found at Rose’s garage with the boys tinkering with their cars.
Hughie, born in March 1928, lived in New Waterford, NS for most of his life with the exception of time at Mount Allison University and in Halifax. He commenced his working career with Dominion Coal Company as a miner, leaving that profession as underground manager at No. 18 Colliery and, with a young family, changed paths to above ground work. He always relished his time in the mines and said he “was born with a lump of coal.” He was an investor, along with others, in several bowling alleys and could be found at the Sydney Bowl-Mor taking care of the mechanics. While working at Bowl-Mor, he studied Property Assessment and subsequently joined the Sydney Assessment Department as an assessor. When an opportunity arose, he commuted to Halifax, five days a week, as one of the Assistant Deputy Directors at the Department of Municipal Affairs, travelling throughout the province to various assessment regions. He retired in 1990 and resumed living full time in New Waterford. Hugh and his life-long partner and love , Dorothy (Dot) embarked on a retiree lifestyle, with winters in Florida, summers in Mira and travel. They were truly a team and together they were wonderful and loving parents, aunt and uncle, and cousin to quite a few, and dear friends to many. Their love for each other and family was easily expressed in their time exploring the world around them, festivals, concerts, plays; their kindness and generosity were a hallmark of their belief in family and people.
Hugh was honoured to be a member of the Maple Leaf Masonic Lodge #88 in New Waterford and subsequently a Life Member of the Tyrian Youth Lodge # 45 in Glace Bay where he received his 50th year jewel. Hugh was also a Philae Shriner and a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite – Valley of Halifax. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the New Waterford District Community Center. Upon retirement, he was a member of the Kiwanis CB Golden K in Sydney and enjoyed taking part in their fundraising activities, singing in the chorus, greeting cruise ships and volunteering as a driver for the ECMA’s and Pro Golf Tournaments. Hugh was a member of Calvin United Church in New Waterford where he previously served as an Elder, on the Board of Stewards, and as a former member of the Sydney Presbytery.
Hugh is survived by his loving daughters, Susan, St. John’s, NL and Kathryn (Kathy), Halifax, NS. He was predeceased by his deeply loved wife of 69 years, Dorothy (Dot) on August 24, 2019. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, David and Mary (Slessor) Morrison, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Due to the restrictions of Covid-19, a Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date, and interment will now be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery, alongside his wife, Dot.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford and with Rev. Duncan Roach, Calvin United Church, New Waterford. Memorials in his memory may be given to Calvin United Church, 417 Smith St., New Waterford, NS B1H 3R3, or to a charity of your choice.
