Howard Dixon
1933-2020
It is with great sadness that the family of Howard Dixon
announce his passing on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Dr. Georges
L. Dumont University Hospital. Born in Riverside Albert NB, he was the
son of the late Everett and Mabel Helen (Tingley) Dixon, and brother
of the late James Dixon. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife
of 67 years, Betty; daughters Rebecca (Dan) Hink, Gwendolyn (Jim
Potts) Dixon and son Jeffrey (Nancy) Dixon; grandchildren Stephanie
(William) Linnard, Ian Hink and nieces Lisa, Charlene, Heather, Heidi,
and Krista; nephews Peter, Andrew and Darren, and family members
Maynard William and Sandra Atkinson and Arnold Hopper. He was also
predeceased, by his sisters-in-law Phyllis Dixon and Pauline Hopper,
and by his niece Cynthia Atkinson (Hewitt).
Howard graduated third in his class from the University of
New Brunswick with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1955. He worked
for the NBTel Company, CNR and RG Cowan & Associates, before
beginning his own engineering firm, HN Dixon Ltd. in the mid
1970’s. During his career, Howard was a member of the
Electrical Institute of Canada, the Atlantic Professional Engineers,
won an international lighting design award for his work on the new
Riverview High School, built in 1979, and served as president of the
Illuminating Engineering Society. Howard also had a strong interest in
mechanical engineering and loved to invent mechanical items, such as a
combination tractor-snowblower, and a specialized auto transmission.
Howard served as a councillor on the last Gunningsville Council,
before the amalgamation of the Town of Riverview.
Howard was a passionate member of the Albert County
Historical Society and an avid genealogist. He researched his own
family, the Jonah family, and contributed to the completion of many
other genealogies of local and distant families who had Albert County
connections. In his younger years, Howard had an interest in outdoor
activities, such as fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling. He closely
followed the Toronto Blue Jays and the Curse of Oak Island.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the
excellent care provided to Howard and his family by the nurses of 4E
and the palliative care team.
A private service will take place at the Dawson Settlement
(Jonah) Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Cobb’s
Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Rd., Riverview
(869-2007). Donations may be made to Harvest House, the Albert County
Historical Society or the Tree of Hope at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont
Hospital.
