Helen Thompson
Helen Thompson (née Jackson) died peacefully on November 16, 2020, at the age of 103, at Cedarcroft Place Retirement Residence in Stratford, Ontario.
Helen was born in Sudbury in 1917. She was from good genes; her mother lived to 94 and her father to 80.
She met her future husband, Watson Thompson, in Sudbury, and they married in 1942. After Watson returned from serving in World War II, they moved to Fourth Avenue in Sudbury where they lived for 50-plus years. During this long and stable life, Helen worked as a proofreader at the Sudbury Star. She kept a list of newly discovered words on pieces of paper taped to a wall in her kitchen – a sign of her love and careful attention to the English language.
Along with a love of gardening, Helen and Watson enjoyed travel and kept extensive journals about their trips. They enjoyed the island of Barbados and were very fond of the kindness of its people. Their travels took them to many countries around the world, including as far away as Australia.
Helen was a devoted Anglican and eventually became a lay reader in the Anglican Church. She read lessons for Sunday services and sometimes delivered memorable sermons.
She and her husband received commendations for their long service and volunteer work at a Sudbury hospital.
Helen loved all things British including its mystery TV shows and books. At one time, she had a very large collection of classical music 78s, including her favourites, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. She had a life-long love of movies, for which she kept a running list of every one she had seen. Her favourite: 84 Charing Cross Road.
Helen’s husband, Watson, predeceased her in 2012 at the age of 98. Helen is survived by her two children, Arthur (Carol) and Margaret (Larry Davidson), her two grandchildren, Douglas Hartley and Craig William (Joey Meyer), and her one great-grandchild, Henry.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a funeral service will be held at a later date.
Condolences can be delivered online through W. G. Young Funeral Home in Stratford.
Those who wish to donate in Helen’s memory may do so to a charity of their choice.
