It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our darling Mother, Helen (Nellie) English nee Dawe on December 8, 2020. Predeceased by her husband Patrick (January 3, 2014). She will also be fondly remembered by her sister Rita Dawe, and special sister-in-law Beth (English) Dreger and her extended Dawe, Murphy and English families, along with lifelong friends.
Helen was born in Kelligrews, CBS on June 15, 1934. She attended St. Edward’s School, upon graduation she went on to complete a commercial secretarial program at the Presentation Convent in St. John’s, shortly after she obtained employment with the first female lawyer in Newfoundland, Louise Saunders Q.C. L.L.B. She met the love of her life, Pat English in 1950 and they were married in September 1955. After raising their six children she returned to the workforce with Services Canada where she worked until her retirement in 1997.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all the staff of 1SE Pleasant View Towers who were so loving and caring to her. Please know that each of you are amazing individuals and we will be forever grateful for the quality of care and love you provided to our Mother. We extend a very special thanks and gratitude to Nurse Practitioner Vicky Doyle. A special thank you to Dr. Sutton and Dr. Chaulk for the care you provided to our Mother over the years.
Her life was a living example of love, compassion, empathy and kindness to others, along with her deep faith which carried her throughout life. She remained until her passing a dedicated and loving Mother first and foremost which we are forever grateful to God for the honour of having her as our Mother (Mommy).

Funeral mass will be held from Holy Family Parish, 69 St. Thomas Line, Paradise on Friday, December 11 at 10:00 a.m. with interment to follow in St. Thomas of Villanova Cemetery, Topsail. “There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.”
