Helen’s Obituary
It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Helen Isobel Sweet (nee MacDonald) as she joined the choir of angels on March 30, 2020 at the age of 91 at Grandview Manor in Berwick, Nova Scotia.
Born May 23, 1928 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia Helen was the daughter of John Malcolm MacDonald and Ethel Blanche MacDonald (nee MacKinnon). Helen will be remembered as a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her sister Mildred (Cecil Hebb), daughter Cynthia Williams (Gary) and son Paul (Bev) Sweet; her grandchildren Erik (Renee) Williams, Ryan (Lisa) Williams, Adam (Katherine) Sweet and Brianna (Brandon) Rosenthal; great grandsons Owyn Williams, Jack Sweet and Jack Williams, and many special close to her heart nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Sweet, parents John and Ethel MacDonald, and her three brothers Sears, Ewen and Harold MacDonald.
Helen was always proud that she was born and raised in Pictou Co., often sharing the many stories of spending wonderful summer afternoons at Melmerby Beach. After marring the love of her life on March 25, 1948 she and Bill moved around the Maritimes until settling in Middleton in 1961 where Helen worked at the Middleton Royal Bank for over 20 years. Helen worked tirelessly on many committees with the Middleton Baptist Church and loved singing alto for 50 years with the choir. Helen was also very active over the years with the I.O.D.E., Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer Society, Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton Curling Club any many other charities.
Helen and Bill loved to travel and took many trips to Alberta to be with Cindi’s and Paul’s families to see her grand-children who were very important to her. She will also be remembered for the many strawberry pies and cookies she made when she visited family & friends. She was also known for being an incredible seamstress which brought her many hours of happiness. Helen enjoyed her time at their cottage at Trout Lake, NS where she and Bill spent many happy hours paddling the lake, watching for loons and enjoying beautiful sunsets on the deck with close friends and family when they came to visit.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Grandview Manor staff especially on Winslow Unit and most recently on Ross Unit for the tender loving care she received over the past 4 years. Special thanks to Rev. Sarah Scott for helping Helen continue on her faith journey.
Due to the coronavirus the family will be holding a celebration of Helen’s life when the world is a safer place for her family to travel back to N.S. from Alberta & Mexico. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Helen may be made to Middleton Baptist Church, Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice.
