Gregory Perry: Petty Officer Perry 2nd Class
1948-2020
Gregory William Perry, 72, of Oromocto, NB, after battling
heart, stroke and diabetes for several years, passed away peacefully
on October 23, 2020, with his loving wife, Gloria and his daughter,
Lisa, by his side. He was born in Shag Harbour, NS, and resided at
Pine Grove Nursing Home, Fredericton, NB.
He is survived by his wife Gloria; daughter Lisa VanOord
(Joas) and her children Anishka, Oliver, Cynthia, Amelia all of
Springfield, NB; sons Jason Perry and his daughter Hayley, both of
Halifax, NS, Corey Perry as well as Shawn Biggs (Cindy) and their son
Stevan Keating and his children Evan, Lucas and Kyra Keating all from
New Minas, NS; granddaughter Sunny Biggs of BC; sister Mona Flemming
of New Minas, NS, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother Geraldine Blades of Shag
Harbour, NS; sister Janet Waybret and son Douglas Biggs of
BC.
After high school, Greg started off as a lobster fisherman in
Shag Harbour, NS. He then joined the Navy to see the world. Greg
retired in 1993 in Ottawa, ON, as a Petty Officer
2nd Class after spending 27 years in the RCN.
He got to sail on many ships out of Halifax, NS. Also, he was a Prep
Chef at the Old Orchard Inn, Wolfville, NS, for a year before becoming
a Commissionaire at Camp Aldershot, Kentville, NS & Michelin
Tire, Waterville, NS, for the next 13 years.
Greg loved to play card games, especially crib tournaments at
the Legion. He was even recognized for having a 29 hand. He
volunteered at KRRC, Waterville, NS, for 17 years and he was loved by
all. Greg had a nickname for many friends, and he was known in the
Navy as Hummer Blue because he hummed as he drank Labatts Blue beer.
The nurses at Pine Grove called him their « Comedy Relief »
because of his sense of humour. He was a real social butterfly and
everybody knew him and he knew them.
He was predeceased by his dog Brandon, who his wife always
said, « Greg loves him more than me! » Greg loved spending
time with his family and friends.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life is to be
held at the Oromocto Legion, Branch #93, at a later date. Another
celebration of life will take place in NS next year. For those who
wish, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s
choice.
