Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Jerry Pennock announces his recent passing at the age of 71, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Jerry was born to Wilson and Gladys Pennock at Elnora Hospital, a few years after his father returned from serving in WWII. His early years were spent on a small, struggling farm east of Elnora. In first grade, Jerry started his education at the one-room Cornwall Valley School, walking over a mile each day to school. Later, he rode the bus to the school in the village of Elnora. Those early years laid the foundation for Jerry’s matter of fact outlook on life. When his family lived on the farm, they attended church at the Ashcroft School, and faith became a part of his life. When Jerry was in high school, he got his first motorbike and the family moved into Elnora where he could hang out with friends. After graduating from Delburne High School and studying Gas Technology at NAIT, Jerry worked in the oil and gas industry throughout Alberta, including at Nevis, Fairview and Fox Creek.
In 1971 he married Denise Penner, the love of his life. Five years later, they settled in Calgary where his one and only daughter, Robin, was born. Jerry continued to work in oil and gas as Production Manager at Anderson Exploration until he retired in the late 1990s. Jerry was a keen investor throughout his life; after his retirement, he focused full time on managing his investment portfolio. Jerry loved animals, especially his cats, and appreciated nature. Walking with his sister Brenda and her dog in the local parks was a weekly tradition. He also liked motorbikes, cars and country music. His favourite artists were Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johnson and Waylon Jennings. His daughter’s middle name, Amanda, was inspired by a favourite song by Waylon Jennings.
Jerry enjoyed watching hockey, football, and “Saturday Night Live,” and kept a close eye on the financial news. He had a keen interest in investing and politics and was always up for a lively discussion on current events. Always after a good bargain, he and Denise enjoyed combing garage sales for western art and artefacts to add to their collection. Jerry was very handy and would fix anything that he could. He restored antique furniture and created unique, handcrafted hiking sticks from Elnora willow brush. He thought that if anything was worth doing, it was worth doing right.
We will remember him for his deep commitment to family, strong work ethic, punctuality, honesty, sense of humour (especially the gags), and love for his grandchildren, Hope, Justice and Loyal. Jerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Denise; daughter, Robin Pennock; granddaughter, Hope Tomlinson; grandsons, Justice and Loyal Tomlinson; sisters, Brenda Pennock and Virginia (Rob) Edwards; nieces, Jocelyn and Rebecca Edwards; step-daughter Nicole (Dave) Campbell; as well as the many other members of his extended family and friends. Jerry was predeceased by his parents Wilson Pennock and Gladys (Morse) Pennock.
