Georgina (Gina) Anne Smith
March 16, 1939 – December 23, 2019
Gina was born in Winnipeg to George and Anne Maryk and will be deeply missed by her husband of 61 years, Dave and their children Wayne (Jacquie), Debbie Dierckens (Bill) and Judy Helbig (Paul) and six grandchildren, Laura Smith, Sara Allard (Coard), Lisa Smith, Daryl and Karl Dierckens and Quinn Helbig, sister-in-law Rosemary Murphy, step-grandchildren Aimee (Kevin), Tracy (Dave), Brett (Melissa) and step-great-grandchildren Lachlan, Emerald, & Kingston as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was pre-deceased by her parents & grandson Logan.
Gina and Dave became high school sweethearts in1954 and were married in November, 1958. During Dave’s 35 year banking career they lived in four western provinces and moved nineteen times. Gina was a stay-at-home Mom and developed many hobbies to keep her busy including knitting, crocheting, macramé & pottery among others. She also spent a few weeks each summer helping her parents at Tall Timber Lodge during peak periods which included cooking, serving, transporting fishermen to & from Winnipeg, storekeeping, purchasing and hauling supplies and whatever else was required. During winter periods she managed the mail & reservations, etc. while her parents were working the sports shows. In later years she volunteered at Cancer Care in Edmonton for 1932 hrs over four years. She started as a driver transporting patients to and from the clinic for treatments and later helped out in the gift shop where the operators quickly realized she was a very adept businesswoman and put her in charge of purchasing. She still had extra time available and made hundreds of dozens of muffins at home for sale in the gift shop to further enhance profits.
She loved cooking, baking, travelling and camping & trailered throughout North America ultimately spending some 27 winters in the south. Gina was known to be a very down to earth person with a friendly personality and unique ability for meeting strangers as well as a natural talent for communicating with young children. Her generosity in frequently sharing cooking treats with anyone around along with her friendly manner and sense of humor cemented many long-term friendships.
The family wishes to thank the Palliative Home Care team and the 3East – Riverview unit for their compassionate care and also Dr. Vivian Gerges for her special care and service above and beyond the norm and who also became a good friend.
A funeral mass and celebration of life will be held January 9, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of St. Timothy, 135 John Forsyth Rd, Winnipeg.
