Obituary for George Gavin Dempster
January 24, 1933 – January 25, 2020
Gavin passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on January 25, 2020 in North Vancouver. We lost a true family man and friend who will always be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and gentle ways.
Gavin is predeceased by Lois, his beloved wife of 50 years, his daughter Megan and his parents George and Margaret. He is survived by his daughter Margo (Alex) Russell, his son Kyle (Carla) Dempster, and three loving grandchildren Alexandra, Oliver, and Joenna. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Valerie Bjarnason and her family and other extended family members and friends across Canada, the United States, Scotland and New Zealand.
Gavin graduated from Magee and UBC – Mechanical Engineering before embarking on a fulfilling career with Imperial Oil. Gavin retired in 1988 and soon after he and Lois moved to Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast. Much of his time was spent relaxing in the log home, which he designed and constructed, walking the trails at Cliff Gilker Park, and beach combing with the dogs. Gavin was also an avid golfer and strolled many miles chasing his wayward golf balls.
Gavin’s sharp wit and humour brightened many a person’s day and his love of fun and teasing ways will be forever cherished. Gavin was a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen, and a heart to comfort.
“Dad you were a role model, a mentor and a positive light in our lives. You will be truly missed and we will always love you. Laughter is the best medicine.”
A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and support staff of Lions Gate Hospital and especially to the wonderful staff and volunteers at 7 West Palliative Care unit where Gavin spent his remaining time in a peaceful and loving setting. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
In Loving Memory
