March 30th, 1958 – December 8th, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear brother, Gary Patrick Foley, age 62, on Tuesday, December 8th, 2020 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, St. John’s, NL.
Gary is predeceased by his parents Herbert and Agnes, brother George (in infancy) and sister-in-law
Johanna. Born and raised in Tilting, Fogo Island, Gary is one of thirteen children and will be lovingly
remembered by siblings: Bridget Bowen (Jerome), Mary VanWageningen (Jacob), Claire Hurley
(Martin), Kevin (Mena), Clarence (Phyllis), Laura, special twin brother Gerard (Darlene), Gordon
(Adriana), Judy Freake (Neil), Patricia Sharron (Wayne) and Maxine Roberts (Tony). He will also be
remembered by many nieces and nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends.
Gary’s career as an electrician took him to various locations across Canada, and he enjoyed all sports,
but especially loved baseball, hockey, and playing softball on Fogo Island.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care provided over the past 14 years
by Henry, Cindy and the staff at Riverside Manor in Kelligrews, NL. We know he truly felt at home
there. A special thank you to the caring and supportive staff at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home in St. John’s,
NL, and especially Barry Penton, recreation director, who went above and beyond to brighten Gary’s
days with attention and encouragement.
To the staff and medical team at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital (7East), thank you for your dedicated care
and compassion you showed to make his last days comfortable and peaceful. Thank you to Gary and
Janice Keats of the Fogo Island Funeral Home. We would also like to thank Father Anthony and
Secretary Paula McGrath of St. Patrick’s Parish in Tilting.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Fogo Island Funeral Home on Friday, December 11
th from 7:00-9:00PM. A memorial funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Roman
Catholic Church in Tilting on Saturday, December 12th at 11:00AM. Burial to follow at R.C. Cemetery
in Tilting. Donations in Gary’s memory can be made to R.C. Cemetery or the Canadian Mental Health
Association.
