September 16, 1919 – December 19, 2019
Fred passed away peacefully in his home, just 3 months after celebrating his 100th birthday on September 16, 2019. Born to Elizabeth and Edward Redman, he was the eldest of 8 children and is survived by his brothers Paul and Alec, and sister Pauline. He was predeceased by his wife Beatrice, brother Melvin, and sisters Hazel, Eileen and Evelyn. He is survived by his 4 children – daughters Cheryl, Patricia, Beverly and son Jeffrey; 4 grandchildren – Lori, Sheldon, Trish and Tyler; and 6 great grandchildren – Rex, Noa, Ivan, Carter, Lexa, and Alianna.
In his early years, while his family homesteaded near Margo, Saskatchewan, Fred attended Robertson Country School, and worked on the family farm. He later joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, training as a mechanic, and was stationed in Eastern Canada (Halifax and Port Arthur). On Leave in Vancouver, he met Beatrice Dawson (deceased June 8, 2019) and they were married in 1944 in Vancouver, BC.
Fred & Beatrice farmed near Margo, Saskatchewan for 30 years. In 1974 they moved to Armstrong, British Columbia where Fred enjoyed semi-retirement while still working at various jobs including trucking, making and selling cedar shakes, and custom combining in the United States.
He was a hard worker all of his life, however, embraced retirement and knew how to enjoy life. Travelling by RV through many parts of Canada and the United States, Fred & Beatrice had ten wonderful years, experiencing new adventures and making life-long friends. They spent the winters in Southern Arizona, where Fred took up cycling to get around the campground and stay active. They spent many summers fishing at Francoise Lake in Northern B.C., with several trips to the ocean to fish for halibut. One year he drove their RV fifth wheel across Canada, navigating big cities and returning to B. C. through the U.S. Fred & Beatrice celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary on March 11, 2019.
Fred enjoyed his time watching many sports on TV, but his love for the Blue Jays was his greatest pleasure, and he travelled to attend several of their games in Seattle, WA. His many dear friends and acquaintances were always welcomed to his home where he shared an avid interest in politics and community affairs. Family visits were always a special time – he had a generous way of always supporting others in whatever decision they made or whatever road they had taken, making them feel worthy and valued.
In his later years, Fred endured his loss of eyesight with strength and courage. As he was no longer able to drive, he relied on his scooter to get around, until such time that as well was no longer possible. He just took it all in stride, never complaining, and making the best of it.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to brother Jeff; we are grateful that he was able to live with our father for the past two years, and provide the necessary care which allowed us to honor his wishes to remain in his home until his passing.
As well, sincere appreciation is extended from Fred’s family to Dr. Trayer and the Interior Health Authority Care Aides for their excellent care of our father while in his home these last few years.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Frederick Redmann December 19th 2019..
