Florence Elizabeth « Betty » Pettet
1927-2020
Florence Elizabeth « Betty » Pettet passed
away peacefully on Thursday, November 12, 2020 in the Valley Regional
Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville on April 24, 1927, she was a
daughter of the late Mabel M. (Reeves) and Frederick E.
Wade. Always a Kentville girl, she was the youngest of five
children in a vibrant active downtown family. She was
forever haunted by the loss of her sister, Helen, in the 1942 wartime
torpedo sinking of the Caribou ferry. Betty graduated from Kings
County Academy in 1943 and Horton Academy of Acadia University
Business School, class of 1944. She was employed at the Dominion
Atlantic Railway freight department and the offices of Robert G.
Palmeter Jewelers located in Kentville. Mom married our father in 1948
and successfully managed his mischievous ways until his death in 1976.
Many years of their life together were spent enjoying their cottage in
Medford Beach. We know dad will be excited for her new world arrival
and will be asking why it took her so long for which she will have the
answer. Re-joining the workforce at age 50, she was blessed to have
worked for Dr. Rob Gunn, retiring in her early 80’s. She loved him
like a son and his exceptional kindness to her endured over the years
to her passing. Words do not express our gratitude to him.
Mom spent many years teaching Sunday school, volunteering at the
hospital, and being entertained by her grandchildren, whom she
adored. She loved to read and spent many hours completing
puzzles in her sunroom. Mentally razor sharp to the end, we will miss
her everyday but know she is at peace, reunited with her family and
waiting for us down the road. Betty is survived by daughter, Susan
(Peter) Sephton, Kingston, Ontario and son, John (Debbie), Kentville;
grandchildren, William (Jane), Jennifer (Adam), Josh, Michael and
Brette; great-grandchildren Hannah, Benjamin and Caroline; nieces and
nephews. In addition to her husband Freeman and her parents, she was
predeceased by brothers, Beverly (Mary), George (Donalda), sisters,
Gladys (Donald) MacRae and Helen (Ralph) Wightman. Cremation has taken
place and in keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation or
memorial service. A private committal service will be held in the Elm
Grove Cemetery at a later date. Special thanks to her dear friends,
Eileen Cochrane, Hazel Gould and Harold Walker. In addition, thanks to
the many doctors, nurses, the VON, Valley Alarms (Derek Bezanson) and
other medical professionals involved with her care over the years.
Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital
Foundation or the St. James Anglican Church,
Kentville.
