They called me Eva
Eva Johanna (Walburg) Darai July 10, 1933 – August 25, 2020
She was born in Berlin, Germany and grew up during the tumultuous years of World War 2. At age 7 she was sent by government orders to live in the country with a widow, where she lived apart from her parents and little brother for seven lonely years.
After the war she desperately wanted to immigrate to a country that promised her more freedom, so at the age of 21 she left Germany for Montreal. It was in Montreal that she met her husband.
She happily became a mother to her only child Monika (Chris). She was also the proud grandmother of Shari, Emmanuel (Sian), and Nathan (Donna) and was especially proud of her great grandson Ilias. She is also survived by her younger brother Fritz Walburg (Betty) and her nieces Irene (Simon) and Karen (Kevin) and her nephew Peter. She will be dearly missed by all of her family and many friends, especially Doris.
Her passions included hiking, rowing, knitting, opera and classical music. She also loved to travel. Her scrabble partner Netty gave her hours of pleasure. Jerry Lewis, Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton and Lucille Ball and other silly people made her laugh.
She moved from the mainland to the Sunshine Coast to enjoy her twilight years close to her daughter in 2011.
The most surprising story and the greatest testament to the strength and character of this remarkable women is her stint in Hospice in 2018. It was there that she came to the realization that she was just not ready to go. So, it was with that in mind that she announced to the “kind staff” that she “wanted to go home”! Her Hospice experience was one of compassion and care and she spoke highly of her time there, but she returned to Christenson Village and decided to continue to pursue her passion for painting and to learn to play the ukulele. She enjoyed the “miracle” of her recovery!
It is the staff of Hospice, Shorncliffe and particularly Christenson Village and her medical team that deserve our gratitude. A special thanks to Dr Stinson, Dr Papoutsis for their devotion and care. The list of loving caring souls that touched and enriched her life, particularly in these last few years is much too long to list, but we hope that you know how much we appreciate your kindness.
