La célébration de
Elaine Hardacre
12 décembre 1927 –
8 avril 2020
Our mother and grandmother Elaine Hardacre peacefully passed away in Toronto on April 8th in her 92nd year. She fought until the end, but ultimately decided it was time to move on.
Predeceased by her husband Donald in 2000, Elaine lived the past 20 years without her life partner. Regardless, she lived every day to the absolute fullest, showing incredible resolve and was always a fighter in the face of any challenge. Elaine was the rock of our family, constantly composed and level-headed. She was always around to give advice and had an incredible perspective on life. She was a positive person, finding the best aspect in every person and every situation.
Elaine was a strongly independent and a brave woman. In her youth she resisted traditional past-times, instead pursuing sports and outdoor activities. When she was a teenager, she moved from her small rural town to Toronto to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. With the support from her parents, Elaine worked incredibly hard, overcoming significant health challenges, to eventually become a nurse. After training and nursing at Toronto Western Hospital (TWH), Elaine returned to school to study and became a head nurse at TWH and SickKids. At every hospital, Elaine was always well respected by her patients, colleagues and superiors.
Elaine was an incredible mother to Anne and Ian (Karen), and dedicated her life to her family in many ways. Elaine was adored by her grandchildren Kate, Geoff, and Jenny. She played a large part in their lives, caring for them when they were young and attending school events, dance competitions and hockey games as they grew up. Even when mobility was a challenge, Elaine was always interested in what activities her Grandchildren were involved in and how they were enjoying school. Her last smile before she fell asleep forever was looking at the pictures and letters her grandchildren had sent her. Kate, Geoff and Jenny will always remember her big smile, warm hugs and everlasting love.
Elaine’s main priority was always her family and friends. Her warmth, compassion and outgoing personality led to her large network of friends. She loved staying connected with friends she made during her early life in Owen Sound, her time as a nurse and from her Kingsway community. She made many friends in nursing school and thoroughly enjoyed nursing reunions with her friends. Her lifelong friend George Rombough made her last 20 years especially bright, and Elaine was incredibly grateful for his companionship. Even in her last days, Elaine was still connecting and chatting with her friends.
Elaine loved fashion, and was always dressed in a sharp new outfit. Even after she could no longer get to the mall, Elaine would order from her favourite store “Talbots” using their catalogue, keeping both her and her family dressed in the latest styles. Elaine loved music. In her childhood she performed in piano concerts, occasionally in tandem with her closest friends. In her later years, Elaine constantly listened to music, especially her favourites, Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé. Whenever the music was playing, Elaine was either dancing or tapping her foot along to the beat. Later in her life, Elaine loved BINGO, and looked forward to playing each week. In her last years she spent many evenings watching sports, especially hockey, on TV. While she loved the game, she often commented that they “were a bit too rough”. Even when she realized her time was coming to an end, she stayed positive and held her head high.
Mom, grandma, and dearest friend, you will be sorely missed! We love you now and forever.
Cremation has taken place and a service and a big party for Elaine will occur when we can socially gather again.
Please consider making a donation to University Health Network (Toronto Western), the Arthritis Society of Canada, or the Salvation Army (Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor) where incredible healthcare providers like Elaine tirelessly dedicate their efforts.
