Obituary of Edwin Barkhouse
Edwin “Ned” Barkhouse – 85 of Dartmouth passed away November 24th, 2020 in the Dartmouth General Hospital, Dartmouth, NS. Born December 4, 1934, in Windsor, NS, he was 1 of 4 children to the late Morris & Emily (Hazel) Barkhouse.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Elizabeth “Betty”, 3 children Cheryl (Elio), Alana, and Leslie (Colleen), 2 granddaughters Adrienna and Mikaela, an aunt, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Edwin graduated from Windsor Academy in 1953, NS Teachers’ College in Truro in 1955, Sir George Williams University in Montreal, and received his B.Sc. degree from Oswego State College in New York in 1966. He enjoyed teaching Industrial Arts for 35 years, starting in Armdale NS, then Longueuil QC, and then Bedford NS, where he retired in 1990.
While Edwin was in college in New York state, he saw drivers’ education being taught in the schools. So he lobbied with Pierre Laporte of the QC government and obtained approval to fund & bring drivers ed to schools in QC. From then on, he taught drivers’ ed through the schools for 24 years.
His woodworking projects are seen in almost every room of the house, & his love of driving took him and his family on many road trips covering North America.
While he was passionate about his cars & motorcycles, he loved being one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Edwin enjoyed sharing his faith, including talking about the sure hope of the earthly resurrection, – as promised in the Bible at John 5:28, 29.
The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at Dartmouth General Hospital who were so kind and gentle in caring for Edwin these past 5 weeks.
