Edwin Owen Anderson, of Winnipeg, MB, passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital on Tuesday November 17, 2020 at the age of 81 years.
Ed was born March 14 1939 on the farm (N1/2 4. 7. 13) at Cypress River during a blizzard. He received his education in a one room school at Oliver & Glencove schools, completing his high school years at Cypress River High school.
In 1959, he began his career with the Manitoba Telephone System, which spanned over 35 years & he hoped that he could be retired for as many years as he worked. His retirement consisted of much travel for he & Barb, but the majority of time was spent at Andrigaux bay. Ed’s favourite place in the world was the lake…especially the boat trips with the kids to the candy store for “the paper.” Our family cottage was the place that Dad built…literally. He designed, built, supervised & delegated very well. Many of our friends will remember over the years being included in tasks & maybe even being woken up to the sound of the chainsaw outside the bedroom window. Which later always led to the sound of the boat while he took us all skiing & discing.
He was a DYI person who was always calm and patient. He taught all of us to be unhurried in our planning process because it was always “better to measure twice and cut once.” Besides being a Mr. Fix it, Ed was a nature lover. It was important to him to be knowledgeable and respectful of the surrounding area. He volunteered as a Loon Ranger and he collected water samples at the lake yearly from May-October to provide data on phosphorus levels & water clarity. His infinite wisdom, skills & patience were often shared with others.
Dad didn’t like to be rushed, his standard response when being pressured by one of us was “Do I have to decide right now???” It drove us all crazy…and he knew it. Many will remember that smirk….when he knew he was driving you crazy, or teasing you relentlessly. He found it to be wildly entertaining…he loved to tease & no one was immune.
Ed is survived by his wife Barbara (nee Yeo), his daughter Lori & David Wakeman, son-in-law Darren Kraus (Sacha), grandchildren Matthew & Taylor Wakeman(Kieran), Joseph & Katie Kraus. Brothers Merv & Sue Anderson of Sault Spring Island, BC, Winston & Donna Anderson of Glenboro, MB. Brothers and sisters-in-law Fran & Ron Triggs of Port Coquitlam, BC, Harvey & Jackie Yeo of Wpg, MB, Darlene Hunt of Wpg, MB, Gordon Yeo of Thailand, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his daughter Shelley Kraus, parents Owen & Eva Anderson, sister Marilyn Anderson as well as father and mother-in-law Doug & Millie Yeo.
Cremation has taken place and a family gathering will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed’s memory to the Manitoba Lung Association, 825 Sherbrook St Room 204, Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5 or to Cancer Care Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave. Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or to a charity of choice.
