Duckfield, Margaret
Margaret passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Errinrung Nursing Home in Thornbury at the age of 97.
Born in Ferndale, South Wales, UK, a coal mining town in South Wales on December 15, 1923, Margaret was a daughter of the late David and Edith (nee James) Duckfield. Her father was a horse trainer and groomsman in “Gentlemen’s Service” for the local gentry. Her mother Edith was a housewife, homemaker and performed general labour outside the home. She had an older sister Alice (May) and a younger sister Violet. Just prior to World War II, the family moved to a London suburb, “Harrow Wealdstone”, where Margaret, then 16, took a job with the Kodak Eastman Corporation. Their neighbourhood was constantly a bombing target during the war by the Germans due to the proximity of the Kodak factory. Unlike her two sisters, Margaret did not marry and did not bear children. She lived with her parents up until they both passed away. In 1957, she and her parents emigrated to Canada, where her two sisters had previously moved. Upon her arrival in Canada, she undertook employment with DeHavilland Aircraft Company in Downsview, Ontario. She and her parents lived with her older sister and her husband Cecil Wilks in Downsview (a Toronto suburb). Her Father David passed away shortly after their arrival in Canada. Margaret and her mother moved to Brampton where they settled. After her mother’s death in 1977, Margaret lived alone in Brampton to beyond retirement. At the age of 81, she developed Alzheimer’s disease, and as the affliction progressed, she relocated to the Errinrung Retirement facility in Thornbury Ontario, where she was well cared for by their dedicated and committed staff.
A private family service of interment will take place.
