Douglas W.’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our father, Douglas Warren Thompson, 78, in Halifax surrounded by his family on January 11, 2020. Born in Oxford, he was the son of the late Warren and Olive (Wood) Thompson. Along side of his wife, the late Carole Ann (Rushton), they operated their family business, D.W. Thompson Agencies Ltd. with Imperial Oil – a 3rd generation relationship dating back to 1921. In his earlier years Doug was a member of 4H, the Lion’s Club, Oxford Curling Club as well as representing the community as a town counsellor and deputy Mayor. He also spent many days/hours driving boys to and from hockey arenas. In more recent years Dad could be found spending time in Folly Lake, taking grandchildren to their numerous activities, helping Kent on the farm, playing board games and peeling Parkview potatoes – a job that he took great pride in. He is survived by his children, Tania Thompson (Kendall Mills), Kent Thompson, Erin (Michael) Emmerson; his 5 grandchildren, Megan Thompson, Riley Thompson, Kayla Emmerson, Annika Thompson and Leslie Emmerson; sister, Verna MacLeod; brothers, Charles (Gladys Mazerolle) Thompson and Henry (Debbie) Thompson, all of Oxford; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Carole; and grandson, Noah. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7–9 pm on Wednesday, January 15 in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford (902-447-2930). Funeral service will take place at 2 pm on Thursday, January 16 in Oxford United Baptist Church. Internment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
