It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Pearl Burns, age 97, on Friday, October 30, 2020, at the home of her daughter on 380 Rudderham Road, Pt. Edward. She was a former resident of the Congregation of Notre Dame, MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney.
Born December 6, 1922, in Selma, Hants County, NS, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Ruby McKenzie.
Mom met and married her one true love, John Burns. Shortly after, they married and moved to Cape Breton, where they built their first home and raised their family of seven boys and seven girls. Mom was a devoted, stay-at-home mother, which she considered her greatest achievement. She was a long-standing member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, devoting many years of volunteer service on their behalf and also a member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River.
Pearl is survived by her daughters, Eleanor (Willie) Chouinard, Ridgetown, ON, Ruth Leyte (Jim Ward), Calgary, Ruby Melnick, Sydney, Claudia MacKay (Jerry Kerr), Hantsport, Gloria (Ed) Jones, Winnipeg, Cathy (Jim) Dunphy, Pictou, Carole Anne (Brian) Young, Pt. Edward and Paula (Pat) Farrell, Braeshore; sons, Doug (Violet Pye), Sydney Mines, David (Carol), Sydney, Bobby (Jane), Howie Centre, Jimmy, Calgary, Roger (Maria), Sydney River and Tim (Terri), Perth, ON; 37 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John; son, Johnny; great-granddaughter, Skye Spencer; sons-in-law, Lloyd Leyte and Dave Melnick; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild in infancy. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Pearl was also predeceased by four sisters and five brothers.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, November 1 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Monday, November 2 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Covid restrictions are in place with minimal seating available. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
