GAVEL Donald Campbell – age 95 of Yarmouth N.S. Passed away peacefully with a son by his side on November 22, 2020, in Veterans Place in Yarmouth. Born in Pleasant Valley, Yarmouth County on June 18, 1925 he was a son of the late Randall and Myrtle(Hurburt) Gavel. Donald served in England and Mainland Europe during WWII. He also volunteered to go to Burma, but the war ended before his arrival. After returning home from the war, Donald began a career as a carpenter and contractor. He was well known for the quality of his work and fair practices. In his spare time, Donald was an avid hunter and fisherman. Donald built his retirement home for himself and his wife Marion, and on many occasions, he could be found working in his workshop building small furniture, which became in high demand. His house was always open, and people often joked they had company seven days and seven nights a week. He is survived by his daughters, Darla Boudreau, Yarmouth; Rosemary (Gerry) White, Deerfield; sons, Paul (Evelyn) Gavel, Frankford ON; Gordie (Cathy) Gavel, Hebron; siblings; Jenny and Darrell; 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Donald was predeceased by his wife, Marion; sons, Donald Jr.; brothers, Kenneth, Abijah, Herman; sisters, Eudora, Lenny, Audrey; son-in-law, Rick Boudreau; and great-granddaughter Courtney.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 25, 2020, from 7–9 p.m. with A Royal Canadian Legion Branch 155 Wedgeport service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 26, 2020, at 2 p.m. from Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. A.D. « Bill » Newell officiating. Interment will follow in Deerfield Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Veterans Place.
