Obituary
Dona Isabel Dobbyn passed away at the age of 76 at the Hinton Hospital in Hinton AB, on Saturday November 28, 2020. She was born in Russell MB to her parents John and Isabel Miller. She had 5 brothers and 4 sisters. She received her schooling at the Islay School at Vista MB, completing grade 11 there. She met Gordon Dobbyn and they married on November 9, 1968 at the United Church in Vista MB. They welcomed their only child Darren on May 15, 1969. Ma enjoyed helping people and spent most of her working career as a nurse’s aide at the hospital in Shoal Lake and later at the Morley House Care Home in Shoal Lake MB. When she retired from nursing, she and Gordon took up farming and raised a small herd of cattle and one mischievous buffalo calf called Buff. Ma liked to keep her hands busy, and after retiring, she wasn’t content with the new amount of free time. She and Gordon took on managing the kitchen at the Strathclair Auction Mart, serving meals on sale days. She also found time to volunteer with the local 4-H, teaching sewing and quilting to those who were interested in learning. Ma was well known for selling her perogies, pie’s and baked goods, supplying the hockey rink, Credit Union and many local families and friends with those goodies. She would often head out randomly and pop by at family and friends with a tray of goodies… just because. After Gordon passed away in 2006 Ma stayed on the home farm until 2007 when she purchased a home in Strathclair. The coffee was always on and she welcomed everyone with a fresh cup. She spent many winters in Hinton with Darren and Nancy. Enjoying day trips to Jasper, Cadomin and the Cardinal Divide as well as trips to visit family and friends in AB. In 2016 she took a trip with Nancy to Grande Prairie to attend a few days watching the Scotties tournament of hearts curling in person. She even got her picture taken with her favourite curler Jennifer Jones. (wink wink). She travelled to Hinton for a winter stay earlier than usual to attend her son Darren’s marriage to Nancy held on November 9, 2018. She was thrilled and couldn’t hide how happy she was. When she returned home in April, 2019 she sold her home in Strathclair and made the move to Hinton AB in September 2019. She was happy to be near Darren and Nancy and having the grand dogs Sadie and Roxy to spoil. She enjoyed the shenanigans, shopping cart hockey, bump to pass for points and our back door shopping trips, donating those items to the homeless shelter and community outreach programs in Hinton. Ma , Dona Dobbyn, is survived by her son Darren (Nancy)Dobbyn of Hinton AB, and Nancy’s children of MB, sisters Eileen Blakemore of Beaumont AB, Betty Musgrove of Didsbury AB , Lois Shmyr of Shoal Lake MB , brothers Fred ( Donna) Miller of Vista MB , Ed (Kathy) Miller of Vista MB and brother in-law Wayne McCutcheon of Strathclair MB , sister in-law Mavis Miller of Virden MB, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dona was predeceased by her husband Gordon Dobbyn in 2006, her parents John and Isabel Miller, her brothers Charlie, Wally and Ron, also her sister Bunny ( Robeana), sister in-law Ethel Miller and her brother in-laws Eugene Musgrove , Ed Shmyr and Joe Blakemore. There will be a graveside service at a later date in Strathclair MB.
