It is with joy and thanks for the gift of her life that we bid a fond au revoir to Margaret Dolphin. Marg passed away just a few days shy of her 89th birthday, after a lifetime of love and laughs.
Marg will be sadly missed by her family, Tom (Diane) Dolphin, Berni (John) Martin, Pat (Colleen) Dolphin, Maureen Dolphin, Paul (Tina) Dolphin and John Dolphin; by 18 beloved grandchildren and, (so far), seven great-grandchildren; by many nieces and nephews, and a very long list of friends.
Marg is survived by her sister Anne (Barry) Ledwidge, her brother Joe (Noni) Hutton and her brother-in-law Edmond Verbeek. Marg was predeceased by her beloved husband Frank Dolphin in 2013; by her parents James Hutton and Kathleen (Moher) Hutton, and her mother-in-law Victoria (Ursaki) Dolphin; by her brothers Jim, Ken and Frank Hutton; her sister Mary Verbeek; by her sister-in-law Eileen Hutton and brother-in-law Jack Dolphin; and by her nephews William Hutton and Michael Ledwidge.
Marg was born in St. Lambert, Quebec, in 1931, the second eldest of seven children. Her family moved to Edmonton in 1945. In 1954 she graduated from the Edmonton General Hospital School of Nursing. Marg worked for a time in the career she loved, before she embarked on her greatest work: her family. She married Frank in 1956 and they were an inseparable team for more than 56 years.
Marg returned to nursing intermittently while raising her family, and took a refresher course in the 1980s that saw her work for another decade as a geriatric nurse. She was involved in many charities, including Mother’s Day Out, Birthright, the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, and the Archdiocesan Social Justice Committee, to name a few.
Marg loved to travel and to spend time with family. She loved nature, children and animals — and they loved her back. She was a woman of generosity and curiosity with a great, often wacky, sense of humour. She treasured simple joys and found great solace in her faith. She was healthy and active well into her 80s. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and found herself slowed down by a stroke, she accepted her turn as a care-receiver gracefully.
Speaking of care, Marg’s family would like to express our profound gratitude to the staff of Capital Care Grandview, where Marg lived — not merely resided — for the past two and a half years. Your smiles and cheerfulness, your respect and love for Marg, were evident every single time we visited. Marg found a happy echo of her nursing years at Grandview, as evidenced by the staff’s nickname for her: “Nurse,” and their generously allowing her to accompany them on their rounds. What beautiful kindness you showed her!
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 1:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Basilica, 10044 113 Street NW.
Donations in tribute to Marg can be made to the Marian Centre, or any charity that is meaningful to you.
“Though I have all the faith necessary to move mountains – if I am without love, I am nothing.”
