It is with heavy hearts that we announce Dionne Gisselle Cardinal, 48, passed away in the early morning hours of June 12, 2020 at the Grey Nuns Hospital Tertiary Palliative Care Unit after a rigorous and unfair battle with cancer. She was born in 1972, the daughter of Teena Audrey Cardinal and William Billy Deranger.
She is survived by her beloved children, Kirsty, Kyle, Timothy, Kristeena and Susan Cardinal; and four precious grandchildren. She was predeceased by numerous aunties and uncles on both her Cardinal and Deranger side. Dionne deeply valued family, her mother passed away when she was only a baby. She moved with her dad and Deranger family and was later adopted by her grandparents, John & Sophie Cardinal, her uncles and aunties helped to raise her which became the source of the values that guided her remarkable yet humble life. She attended Blue Quills High School and went onto to NAIT to confer a Business Administration Diploma with a focus in Accounting in 2003. After graduating, she diligently served the Yellowhead Tribal Council Administration in the Finance Department where she received promotions through her career toward a senior level administrator as the Financial Controller, here she is known for her outstanding work ethic, commitment and integrity. She loved to travel with her family and was an avid lover of concerts and music. The immense love, dedication, compassion and genuine concern Dionne had, not only for her family but for all Native people, was evident in the many youth she took into her home and heart. Dionne was many things to many people, but above all, she was a strong, humble, humorous, nurturing, hardworking Stoney/Dene woman who would ask of those she left behind to look after one another. Words aren’t enough to adequately express how deeply Dionne cared for her children, and larger family. She is survived by over 80 first cousins which she often bragged about having because family meant everything to her.
