Samuel David Stewart 1938 – 2020
David’s life is complete. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland June 24, 1938, David died peacefully at home at Black Rapids, Lyndhurst on May 31, 2020. In Ireland, David apprenticed with Short Brothers & Harland Ltd Aircraft Company becoming a tool designer and earning a Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the Belfast College of Technology. He arrived in Canada on a sunny, cold day in January 1964, after being recruited by De Havilland Aircraft Company in Toronto. David was very proud of his Irish roots but Canada was now “home”. Later that year David attended the Ontario Teacher’s College summer program and achieved a long-held desire to be a teacher. He then began his teaching career in an Oshawa high school. Over the next few years David taught at schools in Kingston and Gananoque. He also attended Queen’s University and the University of Toronto, earning BA and MA degrees respectively. This led to 12 years teaching at St.Lawrence College where he developed the technical communications program. David ended his career with personally rewarding years of self-employment, consulting with industries in Kingston and Brockville and providing training in technical communications.
David thoroughly enjoyed his teaching life, but he also found great joy in living close to the natural world of birds, wildlife, boating, wood cutting and even snow clearing. Music, playing piano, concerts, theatre, his book club get-togethers and family gatherings were very special in his life.
Dearly missed by his wife and best friend Judith. Loved by his brother George Stewart and George’s children Jackie Stewart, David Stewart (Susan), and Claire Erkan (Ezel) and their families. Remembered with affection by his step-sister Irene MisKimmon (John), their family, and cousins in Northern Ireland, as well as by cousins in Canada. Brothers-in-law Michael Harvey, Peter Harvey, and Jack Harvey (Martha), and sister-in law Janice Hietala and all their children Joseph, Robert, Laura, David, and Louise Harvey will sadly miss David. Fondly remembered by his dear friends Marcia and John Nightingale, as well as by many other good friends. David is predeceased by his parents Edward and Alice (Moore) Stewart, his sister-in-law Janet Stewart and his step-father James Barnes.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions a gathering of family and friends in memory of David is not possible at this time. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations made to the Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust, 19 Reynolds Rd, Lansdowne K0E 1L0 or ROLL Aid Centre, 116 Bay St., Seeley’s Bay K0H 2N0 would be greatly appreciated.
