Service
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Cornelis deHooge, born August 25th, 1928 in Amsterdam The Netherlands. Dad passed on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2020 at Holland Christian Homes in Brampton as a result of Covid-19.
Following WWll, Cornelis served his apprenticeship in the steel fabricating industry before getting married to Johanna Hermina Balke and emigrating to Canada in 1953. Travelling by ship they arrived in Canada and settled in Toronto where they were soon joined by Cornelis’s younger brothers Peter, Maarten, Hans and younger sister Corrie in 1954, who they sponsored and helped raise. Cornelis began his career in Canada with the John Inglis Company as a sheet metal fabricator. Hard work and perseverance brought him to Dominion Bridge Company where he ultimately became a Chief Estimator for large pressure vessels.
Cornelis is predeceased by his wife Johanna in 2000 and brother Peter in 2015. He is survived by his sister Leny and brother Maartin in The Netherlands as well as his brother Hans and sister Corrie in Canada.
Cornelis was very proud of his three children, Cornelius Peter deHooge, John William deHooge (Heather) and Margaret Price (Greg). Cornelis was a loving Opa to 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Dad and Mom proudly embraced their new country and spent many summers travelling and camping throughout much of Canada with three kids in tow. Coming from a cycling nation, Dad taught us how to strip and rebuild our bicycles. Dad was a great story teller and had a witty sense of humour. In retirement Dad enjoyed visits with his sister Corrie out west and they also travelled to The Netherlands to visit their brother and sister together, some great stories and memories were shared.
The family wishes to thank Holland Christian Homes for providing Dad with over 20 years of community and Christian fellowship. When conditions permit, the family will gather for a private celebration of life. Donations can be made to Crossroads Christian Communications Inc., at crossroads.ca if so desired. Arrangements entrusted to Rod Abrams Funeral Home, Tottenham, 905-936-3477. www.RodAbramsFuneralHome.com
