Clarence Goodine
1928-2020
Clarence Goodine passed away at his home with his loving family on
Wednesday, July 8 at 12 noon. He was 91 years old, just 17 days shy
of his 92nd birthday celebration. Clarence Albert Goodine was born on
July 25, 1928 to John (Bub) and Lila (McQuade) Goodine in Tilley, New
Brunswick. He was predeceased in death by his parents, John and Lila
Goodine, brothers, Earlen and Freeman Goodine, and sister, Nita
(Young).
Clarence was the last surviving member of his family.
His wife of more than 55 years, Nancy Goodine, is left to cherish his
memory, along with his children Daryl Goodine (Joan), Sharon Watson
(Reid), Verdell Goodine (Marie), Carol DeLaBreure, Seth Goodine
(Laura), Nita Williams (James), and Beth Boyd (Alex). His 14
grandchildren and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews will
not soon forget their Papa/Uncle as a gentle giant.
At 14, Clarence left school to work in the wood camps to cut lumber.
At 16, he began peddling meat with his Uncle Dougie Goodine. He soon
became a butcher and sold meat in Tilley and the surrounding areas.
At that time, he also installed many homes with plumbing and
electricity.
Clarence Goodine gave his life to the Lord as a young man. He began
serving as a youth leader, often taking car loads of young people to
services in both New Brunswick and Maine.
Clarence began working for Victoria Contractors as a heavy equipment
operator, learning a trade that served him well for many years. From
there, he went to work as a Superintendent for K.C. Irving from 1960
until 1972. During this time, his leadership skills were being
identified and developed. Many roadways, and Irving gas stations were
put in around the Maritimes and Newfoundland under his supervision.
In 1964, he supervised the construction for the groundwork to build
the smelter in Belledune, built the highway up the Tobique River, put
the boom piers in the river at Beechwood, and the causeway in East
Saint John. Clarence married the love of his life, Nancy Mowat, in
Minto, New Brunswick on November 7, 1964.
In 1972, his cousin and best friend, Glazier Goodine passed away. It
was then he bought Glazier’s business, G.H. Goodine’s
insurance, and moved to Perth-Andover. He successfully ran this
business until he handed it over to his son, Seth, in the early
nineties. From then on, he worked wherever he could help until 87
years of age.
Over the years, Clarence served in other positions, such as:
Board Member of the University of Maine
Coordinator of Life Line, installing Life Line in Seniors in their
homes
President of the Farmer’s Store
President of Valley Horse and Saddle Club
President of the Rotary Club
Part Owner of River Valley Tel-A-Com
Clarence was a lover of God, life, people, sports, the outdoors,
horses, and most of all, his friends. He was known as an avid hunter
and fisherman. When his sons lived out west, he would fly out to
visit them and Daryl would fly him in his plane to go fishing in the
great lakes of the North-West Territories. His children are thankful
their father instilled in them a love for God, going to his camp, and
the outdoors. They cherish many memories of going out to Dark Lake by
snowmobile or walking 5 miles through the woods. Clarence hosted many
at his Dark Lake camp. Some of his most cherished times were with his
pastor, Bishop H.M. Lewis, and Rev John Mean hunting and fishing.
Clarence loved to serve his church and community. When asked if he
would build a causeway from the island to the mainland of Miller Lake
Camp, he went. He also took part in bulldozing the landscape where
Calvary Tabernacle now sits. His family always enjoyed listening to
him tell stories, but the best part was when he’d laugh as hard
as they did, with tears running down his face. One memory his
children have is that they always left his home encouraged. In his
latter years, he was as an Elder on the Deacon Board at Calvary
Tabernacle. Clarence was heard saying many times, “What a
wonderful hope we have in the Lord. » We are mourning here today,
but we have a wonderful assurance he is rejoicing in heaven.
There will be a public visitation at Calvary Tabernacle, 12 Legion
