Carol’s Obituary
The family of the late Carol Sleeva, beloved wife of Gary Sleeva, announce her sudden passing on Thursday, July 30, 2020, at the age of 66 years.
Carol Ann was born on May 5, 1954, to Ernie and Rose (Kuprowski) Haw in Foam Lake, SK. Raised on the family farm east of Foam Lake, Carol grew up with a large family in a small house.
She attended school in Foam Lake where she completed grades 1 to 12. She went on to further her education and graduated from an LPN nursing program at SIAST in Saskatoon. While nursing in Canora, she met her husband of 47 years, Gary Sleeva. They were married on June 29, 1973.
Carol’s greatest pleasure was her children, Alecea, Mathew, and Travis. Her greatest sorrow was losing her son, Travis.
She loved her son-in-law, Matt and daughter-in-law, Shyla, when they were added to the family. Undeniably, her reasons for living were her grandkids, Olivia, Quinn, and Charlie.
Carol’s faith was also very important to her. She taught Catechism, First Communion and Confirmation classes and was also a member of the Catholic’s Women League.
Her interest and investment in her children’s education lead her to run for the School Board, where she spent many terms and served as chair before retiring from the board.
While nursing, an opportunity became available for Carol to work for the Saskatchewan Children’s Dental Plan. The Dental Plan was short lived, so Carol switched careers and accepted employment with the Canora Credit Union, where she worked as a Loans Officer until a brain aneurysm briefly took her out of the work force.
After retiring from the Credit Union, Carol re-entered the work force as a Constituency Assistant in the Canora Pelly Constituency office, serving Ken Krawetz and Terry Dennis.
The thought of the Canora Legion Branch closing and not having a Remembrance Day Service didn’t sit well with Carol, so she became a Legion member and with a group of the finest women you could ever meet, worked diligently to keep the Canora Legion Branch in operation.
Carol had a keen interest in politics and was one of the most politically informed people you could ever meet. The only other passion stronger than that was her love for friends and family. Her energy was always directed at making their lives better.
Carol’s untimely passing was on July 30, 2020, on the farm home she loved. She was predeceased by her father, Ernest; her brother, Ivan; and son, Travis.
Carol is survived by her husband, Gary; daughter, Alecea (Matt); son, Mat (Shyla); and her treasured grandchildren: Olivia, Quinn, and Charlie. She is also survived by her mother, Rose; brother, Dennis (Lynn); and sisters, Hazel (Pat) and Peggy (Patrick); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
A Public Visitation will be held from 7:00-9:00 p.m., Thursday, August 6, 2020, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK. A Private Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 5, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Franklin Emereuwa, as Celebrant.
Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada or to the Royal Canadian Legion – Canora Branch, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Carol Sleeva.
