Carol Erna Gurr Wednesday December 2nd 2020

The family announces the passing of Carol Erna Gurr, in her 78th year, with loved ones by her side on 2nd December 2020, at the Brantford General Hospital following a sudden event. Carol is survived by daughter Corrinne Radlo, son Bill Gurr (Sandra), all of Brantford, and daughter Michelle Grimwood (Jonathan) of Calgary; grandchildren Eric Gurr, Alicia Gurr (Josh Tinson), Brandon Radlo, Taylor Radlo, Samuel Grimwood and Fionian Grimwood; great-grandchild Maverick Tinson; Godson Taylor Batchelor. Carol will be fondly remembered by brother Jim Daniels (Diana) of Brantford, sister-in-law Doris Gyorffy (Robert) of Elora, many nieces, nephews and friends. On all the important days in our lives – and on the regular ones, too – our mother, sister, auntie, grammie and great-grammie will forever be in our hearts and on our minds. Carol was born in Brantford on 15 January 1943 to Walter and Erna Daniels; she attended Brantford Collegiate Institute before her training in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps at Kingston where she met her husband of 55 years, the late William (Bill) Gurr. Following her 1964 marriage, Carol settled in Toronto for a decade where she started a family and committed to life-long memory the TTC subway routes and lines; a remarkable achievement which is highlighted by the fact Carol never earned a driving license yet she knew exactly how other’s were meant to get around, often times knowing more than her driver did. Returning to her home neighbourhood of Holmedale (because there’s no place like Holmedale, except Westdale). Carol was employed by GWG Limited/Levi Strauss Canada for several years before her twenty-five year pursuit as a licensed Home Day Care provider with the City of Brantford (1980-2005). By extending her home Carol made a significant contribution to caring for the babies and children of her community, building several long-standing unique relationships which she valued and appreciated. Rarely underestimating her skills, Carol could be a powerhouse with a sewing machine, often dominating fabric, needle and thread to yield well-crafted garments which would not dare to have a lopsided seam or a crooked zipper. Scarcely would a humid southern Ontario canning season pass without Carol pickling and preserving vast amounts of produce to fill her fruit cellar for any potential coming of armageddon; her family would not be without jars of ripe cucumber relish, gherkins and pickled beets regardless of a lack of air-conditioning or non-vinegared air to breathe. Surely in the years to come, Carol’s family will further applaud her talents as they pass-down sweet pinafore dresses, adorable bubble rompers, distinctive wedding gowns and heirloom recipes (and jars!) to present and future members. Friends and family are invited to say a final good-bye to Carol in the spring/summer of 2021, or when the current pandemic restrictions allow, details of which will be shared in due course. Following Carol’s wishes, cremation has occurred. Greatly appreciated are the Emergency Department and Palliative Care team at the Brantford General Hospital and Carol’s long time and faithful physician Dr. Gerard Quinn. As expressions of sympathy, donations made in Carol’s name to Lansdowne Children’s Centre would be most welcome.
