Carol was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma and friend. She was much loved and will be missed every day by Andy, Kurt, Holly & Isa as well as her siblings, Di, Al & Peg. She introduced her children’s partner’s (Nigel and Eline) to the extended family by saying firmly « and we really like them » in a tone that dared you to feel any other way.
Carol had a peripatetic childhood living in Hay River, Manning, Ponoka, Sedgwick and Graham. She went to Bowness High and UofC and she began her teaching career in Airdrie. But once she and Andy settled into Red Deer that was their forever home and she taught at Grandview, Central, Pines, and retired from Westpark in 2010. Carol lived in her beautiful garden all summer long, growing food and flowers and playing with her cats.
Carol was courageous, honest and direct. She was a woman who could have been successful in many professions but was gifted as a teacher. She was particularly interested in early literacy and whole language and she and Joy spent many hours collaborating. Today, several years after her retirement you’ll hear former students and the parents of former students talk about the teacher who made a difference in their lives, the one who used different methods and reached them in a different way than anyone else – and it’s Mrs. Schmidt.
Mrs. Schmidt was passionately devoted to books; worked as a school librarian; and fought for library funding and priorities both in the school system and for the Red Deer Public Library.
Carol also had an adventurous streak — at 15 she and her BFF Hazel survived an earthquake and landslide and Carol thought it was a grand adventure. Her favourite field trip was to Penhold to see the fighter jets and she always asked the pilots to take her out for a spin.
The family extends its gratitude to Dr. J. Hopfner and the staff at Red Deer Hospice for their compassionate care.
