Obituary
Carl Robert (Bob) Johnson, 88, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, with family, in Peachland, British Columbia, on March 21st , 2020. After a long fight, Bob succumbed to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, yet kept his humour and the twinkle in his eye to the end.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Lori, his sons David and Don (Freda), his daughter Janet (Lexus) Bell, and stepdaughters Terry (Kim) Johnston and Bobbi (Ian) Johnston, his brother Ron, as well as seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Bob was born in Vancouver and attended John Oliver Secondary School where he served as Class President in his senior year. Following his natural inquisitiveness for “how things work”, he went on to study Mechanical Engineering at UBC, joining the Undergraduate Society and was elected President of the EUS in 4th year. After graduation, and with a brief consideration for a flying career, Bob joined the pulp and paper industry with Scott Paper. Throughout his successful career, Bob helped Scott expand their capacity and their engineering capabilities at plant locations in Canada and the US.
Early on, in the winters, Bob could be found driving to and from, or in, a cold ice rink – somewhere in the province – to watch minor league hockey games or figure skating. Throughout his life, in the summer, Bob was best known for his love of power boating and water – fishing, taking the kids waterskiing, or touring and just cruising around with Lori. Bob also continued to love and learn how things worked and how they were put together – so he could fix them! His workshop was always full of parts, half-finished assemblies and, of course, bits and pieces that could always be used in some future project. His family, his friends, his neighbours – all knew to take their mechanical problems to Bob. We will miss him very much.
A special thanks to the nurses from Central Okanagan Palliative Care, who provided expertise, comfort and understanding to support Bob’s desire to remain at home – each of them are very special people, highlighted even more so during this time of stress on our medical professionals.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to BC Lung Association in aid of Pulmonary Research at bc.lung.ca/donate. We will come together for a celebration of life as soon as it is safe to gather.
