James (Bud) Thomson
Sydney Mines
James (Bud) Thomson, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many, passed away at home on Monday, May 25, 2020.
Bud was born in Sydney Mines to the late Thomas and Isabel Thomson (Scott), and grew up on Atlantic Street.
Bud treasured fond memories of his working days at The British Canadian Cooperative and Sydney Steel Corporation, which he shared with many. He took great pride in his role as caretaker at Carman United Church in Sydney Mines, a position for which he was recognized for 31 years of faithful service.
Bud was a man of simple pleasures. Family came first and he referred to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as his greatest joys. Back in the day, 67 Fraser Avenue was the place to be for family and friends, especially on Saturday night, hockey night. He was a true fan of the Leafs and the Blue Jays. Bud will be remembered for his gentle but colourful personality and his unique use of words.
Dad and Mom were an amazing team. She was the love of his life. Married for sixty-two years, they were a true example of love and commitment. Dad was a fearless and confident driver and in retirement, he and Vi, with map in hand, enjoyed many road trips.
Bud was predeceased by his parents, his son James in infancy, his sisters Isabel (Sis) Erickson and Adelaide King.
He is survived by his loving wife Violet (Gillan), children Paul (Heather), Janet (Lorne), Kathy, Karen (Rob), Peter (the late Morley MacKinnon), Ken (Rebekah). grandchildren Joe (Samantha), Erin (Scott), Kenzie (Andrew), Carly (Bryce), Alexander, Katherine, Kyle (Natasha), Mark, Emma, Abby, Lindsay, Landon, Ava, Jena, James and Jeremiah, and great-grandchildren Jake and Cole. He is also survived by siblings Roy (Bernice), Jessie (Mel) and Wendy. He was Uncle Bud to many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank all of Buds’ caregivers, including the nurses, doctors, VON, Homecare and Palliative care. Special thanks to the « gang » at Golden Drive for the love shown over the last weeks and always.
A celebration of Buds’ life will be held at a later date.
« Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, How great Thou art. »
