Obituary
It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Bernard (Bernie) George Wall of Flin Flon, MB.
Bernie was born June 14, 1950, in Kamsack, SK to Francis and George Wall. By 1956, the family had relocated to Flin Flon. Part of a close knit family, one of his first jobs was working for his uncle at their farm in Pelly, SK and he returned back to visit his extended family there many times over the years. Bernard was married in 1974, welcomed three daughters, and was divorced in 1989.
A Red Seal Carpenter, he got his start in the apprenticeship program at HBM&S. In 1978, he took a position with Transportation Canada in The Pas. When his brother Gordon showed an interest in carpentry, they started Wall Bros. Construction. Bernie continued with the business after his brother’s death and is responsible for many quality projects throughout northern Manitoba. He also shared his knowledge and expertise as an Instructor at Northlands Community College. In his later years, he became the Maintenance Foreman at Baker’s Narrows Campground. His handiwork can be admired all over the campground, notably in the Yurts, picnic shelters, and shower houses built during his tenure there. He retired at the end of last year ready to dedicate his time to his own projects.
Bernie was a proud member of the community in which he was raised and believed in ‘shopping local’. Over the years, he was an integral member of the Elks and enjoyed curling as a member of the Uptown Curling Club and in many bonspiels. He even learned the art of pebbling to be able to train future icemakers! He was a past season ticket holder for the Flin Flon Bombers though in recent years often travelled south in the winters to see his two eldest daughters and spent more time watching his grandchildren play. He also enjoyed taking trips out west to explore British Columbia with his youngest daughter.
Bernie loved to be outdoors, especially on the water. He spent his 20s racing canoes and crafting his own canoes and paddles; a passion he had planned to start up again in retirement. He paddled in the Gold Rush and is known for his cedar strip canoes and innovative paddle design. He passed his love of canoeing on to his three girls, spending countless hours working on perfecting their paddling technique. And of course, he loved to fish, no matter the season.
Bernie will be remembered by his daughters Renata (Rob), Rebeka (Mike) and Rhiana for his unwavering support, his love of the outdoors, his ability to be in the moment, our endless phone dates, and believing we could do anything with knowledge and hard work. His grandchildren Cole & Lexi (Renata) and Asher & Tatum (Rebeka) will miss his bedtime stories and handcrafted gifts. His sisters Velma (Gerry), Gloria (Bruce), Lois (Jaime) and Noreen (Dave) and their families will undoubtedly miss his tall tales, his willingness to help no matter the situation and his ability to listen without judgement. His nieces & nephews will agree there was no one quite like Uncle Buck. He leaves countless extended family members and friends behind. Bernard was predeceased by his parents George & Francis, his brother Gordon, his sister Dorothy and his niece Tammy.
Not a day will go by that we won’t miss him but we find comfort in knowing he will live on in our shared memories and will be with us in spirit on all our adventures. The next life will surely be a better place when we get there, as he no doubt putters around fixing things up while he waits for us.
Given the current restrictions on travel and gatherings, we are postponing the memorial service. We ask that in the interim you share your favorite memories, stories or photos of Bernie at www.hemauerfuneralhome.com so that we can remember our dad together until we can gather to celebrate his life.
