It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Bernadette “Bernie” Mahood at the age of 98 years on January 19, 2020. She was born to the late Samuel and Beatrice Majeau at Lac La Nonne, Alberta on November 11, 1921. She is survived by her children: Donna Garneau, Dennis (Bev) Mahood, Sandra Thorvaldson, Sam (Judy) Mahood, Therese (Reg) Savard, Cathy Dick, Shannon (Harold) Senz; 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; sister, Yvette Vinson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Alexander Mahood in 1997, and sons-in-law, Jerry Garneau and Bruce Dick.
Bernadette grew up on the shores of Lac La Nonne where she maintained the original homestead of her grandparents. When her father died she left school after grade eight to work the farm until the age of 16 when she left home to support her mother and siblings. Her home at the lake is still in the family today and has been the gathering place for her family ever since.
In 1945 she married Alexander and together they were active in the War Amputations of Canada where Alex was a council member for over 30 years. They travelled with the War Amps and she continued to travel with family and friends until her health kept her at home. Bernadette was devoted to her faith and was a lifetime member of the Catholic Women’s League.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Lac La Nonne on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the War Amps of Canada.
