Obituary
Passed peacefully away on October 27, 2020, surrounded by his loving family, Benedict (Ben) Dunne of Mount Pearl and Renews, at the age of 73.
Predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Agnes Dunne, his sister Philippa Dunne, his parents-in-law, Gus and Jane O’Flaherty of Northern Bay, his brothers-in-law, Edward and Patrick O’Flaherty, and sister-in-law, Sheila Dunne.
Leaving to mourn, his wife of forty-nine years, Bernadette (O’Flaherty) Dunne, his devoted children, Raeleen (Kurtis) Baggs, and Bradley Dunne (Candice Verge), and his treasured grandchildren, Taylor and Gavin Baggs.
Lovingly remembered by his siblings, Shirley (Kevin) Stapleton, Patricia (Matt) Dwyer, Anna (Mike) Edmunds, Ig (Janet), Cecilia (John) Broderick, Margie (Gary) Whitty, and special nephew Paul (Sherri) Dunne.
Also leaving to mourn are his in-laws, Mary (Mike) King, Rosaleen O’Flaherty, William (Florence Ann) O’Flaherty, Fabian (Carol Ann) O’Flaherty and Marjorie Doyle (Patrick O’Flaherty, deceased).
Through Ben’s involvement in the sporting community and years of teaching at various schools in the province, as well as at the College of the North Atlantic, he leaves behind many friends and acquaintances.
Ben would hope to be remembered as someone who made a difference in the lives of the people he encountered as a teacher, coach, athlete, mentor, and friend.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl, on Saturday, October 31, 2020 from 12:00-6:00pm. As per Covid restrictions, the funeral service will be held at Barrett’s Memorial Chapel by invitation only. However, the service will be livestreamed on Sunday, November 1, at 2:00pm, for those wishing to attend virtually. At this time, the family would sincerely like to thank the staff of Chancellor Park for their exceptional care of Ben over the past years. Your kindness and compassion are very much appreciated.
