HALEWOOD; A. Deane (nee Haines) ~ Deane’s life ended August 23, 2020 at the Extendicare nursing home in Cobourg after almost three years in late-stage Alzheimer’s. The silence and obliteration of personality inflicted by the disease have seemed altogether the wrong conclusion to an active existence notable for a high order of thinking and feeling. Parenthood was of course a major field for her, in which her approach was basically a matter of right instinct and encompassing affection. These also served her in her profession, which was teaching young children. As a teacher Deane was energetic, involved and innovative, becoming for one three year period a member of a small team of specialists who visited all of the public schools in a large county improving instruction in reading. At another time, she used her resources of ingenuity and sympathy to teach classes of children with special needs. She had a continuing interest in politics which involved her some years as a member of the local riding association of the NDP (Canadian Socialist Party). She was a definite “lefty”, which she thought befitted her Quaker background. Her position included consistent opposition to all of the doings of the Pentagon, particularly the war in Vietnam, and contributed to the family’s coming to Canada in 1967. She would have abominated Trump. She found great enjoyment in her old house and her garden and in such garden related affairs as the “horse manure lunches” at the Doigs. Undoubtedly, her family mattered most to her, and her absence is being deeply felt by her sons Peter and Michael, and her husband Bill. Her daughter, Cindy, died of brain cancer in 2018. Mercifully, Deane knew nothing about that.
