Passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at age 65, surrounded by her family and her beautiful flowers. Toni was the most enthusiastic person you would ever meet. Even with her metastatic breast cancer diagnosis, her jubilation and cheerfulness were awe inspiring for all those she came in contact with.
Her beloved husband of 39 years, Paul Schurter, who she called her Clarence Nightingale, cared for her in a way that she felt truly thankful and blessed. Her vivacious personality and deep love for her friends and family make it a truly painful loss for Paul, her 3 precious children Anthony, Lisa (Matthew), and Vanessa (Vince), her sisters Josephine (Jim) Walters, Mary Ann (Sergio) Borghesi, brother David Carbone, sister-in-law Jane Shelegy, nieces and nephews, her many very dear friends, and extended family in Italy.
Toni loved her 3 children unconditionally and ferociously. These two traits took her around the world, and fuelled her passion as a Mama Bear defending her cubs. Any disturbance to her kids’ peace of mind and mom was ready to “take ‘em down”.
Toni was funny, silly, endlessly entertaining with a randomness you cannot manufacture. A social butterfly, Toni loved talking on the phone for hours every day and going out with her dear friends. Even strangers didn’t know what hit them when they were met with her enthusiasm and chit-chat. Her kids were constantly being told “your mom is the best”. We truly think she was too, she was our cheerleader, the one we would speak to everyday and if we shared good news we could always count on her for the best reactions, which usually meant a number of eruptions including plenty of clapping and cheers.
This love for children extended into her career, where she found her true calling as a French Teacher for 38 years. Madame brought incredible passion and chuckles every day to her students at R.L. Hyslop and Green Acres elementary schools.
A steadfast Catholic and always stunningly stylish, she will no doubt be showing off her dance moves in heaven, dressed to impress in a beautiful outfit with sparkling bling, with her parents Antonio and Rosa Carbone and in-laws Michael and Sophia Schurter. Forever our #1 fan and fashionista, Toni is truly loved and adored and will be missed beyond measure.
“People may forget what you say, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.” Toni’s kindness and energy truly made everyone she met feel special.
A sincere and heartfelt thank you from our family to the Juravinski team, her doctors and nurses, and especially her many friends who generously supported the family throughout this journey. The love, attention, and many home cooked meals we received from her many friends and family during this difficult time were incredibly thoughtful and heartfelt gestures. We won’t be able to thank everyone enough, but this really just goes to show how loved and cherished our Toni was by all.
