It is with great sadness that we have to tell you all that our friend Tony Osborne, a founding member of the Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club and its President from 1996 to 2006, passed away in Southlake Health Centre on August 4, 2020 after several weeks in the ICU.
Tony was born in England in 1935, moved to Canada in 1962 and to Newmarket in 1970, where he and his wife Jennifer raised their four sons.
In 1985 he opened a bike shop (Eagle Cycles) on Eagle Street, which became the hub for local cycling enthusiasts and under Tony’s encouragement, the “Eagles” was incorporated as a club under the Ontario Cycling Association in 1988.
Tony always represented the heart and soul of the club, known affectionately as “El Pres” for his firm but friendly manner in mentoring new cyclists, cajoling others to improve their cycling road manners, fixing member’s bikes or participating and competing in club rides and races.
Tony had great enthusiasm for the sport of cycling and was a constant presence at club events. Through his influence many club members have gone on to compete in provincial, national or international championships.
As many of you are aware, Tony himself was a competitive cyclist well into his 80’s, including the 2019 National Track Championships at the Milton Velodrome and the 2020 Provincial Track Championships where he won 2 bronze medals. He was looking forward to the 2020 Nationals.
In his riding he was an example to those who rode with him and in his approach to life he was an inspiration to all. He will be sadly missed and we send our condolences to his wife and sons and his many grandchildren and great grand children.
