It is with such immense sorrow, my sisters Wendy, Shelly and I must share with you the news that our father Alvin Skoog, age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25th at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary. Our Dad succumbed to illness after a very long battle with medical problems related to a traumatic brain injury, which occurred in 2005 and then peripheral vascular disease & diabetes. Our dad had gained a strong belief in God and was comforted by the knowledge that one day he would join our mother in Heaven. One of his cardinal traits was his unwavering love for his family. Before retiring our father was in construction and was a proud union member. In his later years, Dad enjoyed spending time watching the Walton’s, Little House on the Prairie, and Highway to Heaven.
Our father is survived by his three loving daughters, Liane (Dale) MacDonald, Shelly Kadej and Wendy (Robert) Shard and his grandson’s Curtis Shard and Clinton Shard. He was also very loved by Teri Basi, whom he considered like a daughter. Teri never forgot our Dad, especially at Christmas, where you would find the two of them caught up in a crib game. Dale and I felt so privileged to be in the role of Legal Guardian to our dad. He was predeceased by our mother Jeannette (Skoog) on July 7, 2015 and whom we affectionately referred to as “Peanut”. Even though divorced, our parents became the best of friends once again. For this reason, I have included the picture that was our father’s favorite of the two of them together. Dad took such pride in his grandson’s Curtis and Clinton, and they brought him much joy. Dad embraced his son-in-law’s Dale and Robert, which I think showed his love for his daughters, whom he always wanted the very best. Our father also has sisters and brothers, and many nieces and nephews, for which he enjoyed calls and visits over the years whom will miss him dearly.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the Longview Steakhouse, Starbelly’s, and the Cattle Barron for the warm memories we have of our weekly outings with my Dad. Most importantly, a very special thank you to the care team at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary. The care team were exceptional in how they cared for our father and showed such compassion, especially with how creative they were during this pandemic. They often went out of their way so family members could still be connected with Dad via face-time for much-needed connection. Additionally, we would like to thank Bethany Care Centre resident Anna, who spent countless hours with dad playing crib and sharing snacks of wagon wheels my Dad would bring to all games. Lastly, our family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Alana and Craig of Lyle Reeves Funerals in High River, for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time as they also did with our mother. There will be a celebration of our father’s life post-Covid-19 with a special message to all to stay well.
