Obituary
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Bernice Voth, age 83. Bernice was predeceased by her Husband of 62 years Walter, in 2017. Mourning her departure are her sons: Doug (Verna) & Wayne (Treena), Sister: Shirley Wheadon, Brother: Elmer Young (Grace) and their families.
Bernie started a career path in pharmaceuticals, but falling for the charms of Walter, she decided on family life at home. However, being at home and raising two boys didn’t quell her ambitions. From the comfort of home, Bernie was a prolific poet and ever striving artist. Several of her poems have been published in the Anthologies of Verse by the Poetry Institute of Canada.
She also worked tirelessly at volunteer endeavours, initially playing a critical role in the establishment of the Canadian Diabetes Association in Edmonton. Bernie also became well known in her neighbourhoods in Edmonton and then Ft McMurray as a door to door canvasser for several organizations. She is fondly remembered for her volunteer work behind the scenes at numerous productions at Keyano Theatre in Ft McMurray. Perhaps her greatest pride, Bernie, was awarded national recognition with the Canada Literacy Volunteer Award for her work, helping students in the literacy program in Ft McMurray learn to read.
Bernie and Walter retired to Okotoks in 1996. Bernice lost a short battle with Dementia. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
