Obituary
Christopher Charles Stuart (Stu) Donaldson died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage Saturday, April 4, 2020, at the age of 74. Stuart was born in Lethbridge AB to Margaret (Peg) and Adam (Addie) Donaldson. He was educated in Lethbridge and Calgary. On July 20th, 1974, he married his life partner, best friend and colleague, Mary Weir Stirling. He is survived by his wife Mary, chosen granddaughter Shantel (Dustin) Stotschek and son Wolfgang of Okotoks, chosen daughter Tamsin (Ken) Bieber and family of Cochrane and chosen daughter Torrey Logan of Okotoks. Stu was predeceased by his parents Peg and Addie Donaldson and his sister Diane Cavers. He will be greatly missed by his staff, colleagues, friends and the many clients whose lives he changed.
Stuart received his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary in 1989. His doctoral work was on the relationship of muscle activity as measured by surface electromyographic (SEMG) techniques to chronic pain. He utilized SEMG in studying myofascial pain and fibromyalgia. Unique in the psychophysiology field, he also studied qEEG and brainwave activity combining SEMG with EEG biofeedback producing a comprehensive theory involving neural plasticity and fibromyalgia. His most recent work was in the area of concussion and the brain.
Stuart published extensively on myofascial pain syndromes, fibromyalgia and concussion. In 1995 he won the American Journal of Pain Management Award for The Outstanding Contribution to the Interdisciplinary Pain Management Literature for his work on SEMG, neck pain and headaches. In 2006 he received an Alumni Honour Award from the University of Alberta in recognition of his achievements in his field. He was a past president of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB). He was also actively involved in his community as a former Town of Okotoks councillor and member and past president of Okotoks Rotary. Stuart continued to travel and lecture throughout North America until his death. He was the Director of Myosymmetries, Calgary and the founder, board member and medical director of the Foothills Concussion Rehabilitation Centre, whose objective is to provide concussion treatment to people in need.
