It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert F McAfee after a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by family at Health Sciences Center, sharing a joke or two right till the end.
Bob was born in Ottawa, Ontario, graduated from Hillcrest High School, and joined the RCMP in 1969. He served in Manitoba until his retirement in 1997 and then followed his dream when he purchased his own highway tractor. He drove for a few years and then became dispatcher for Gardewine/Northern Deck.
He was predeceased by his father, Ernest E McAfee, mother Mary E Hyland, brother in law Robert Coote, father in law Frank Perchalski, and mother in law Stella Perchalski. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Elaine (Perchalski), his three children, Collin McAfee, Amber (Quenton) Ducharme, and Kristen (Cory) Fetterly. Six grandchildren, Haylee, Chloe, Quenton, Carter, Brooklynn, and Avery were the highlights of a life well lived. His sisters, Barbara Derksen and Linda Coote will miss his involvement in their lives.
Bob enjoyed playing cards, riding his lawn tractor, surprising people with a joke or two and the never ending stories. A highlight of his day was having coffee with neighbours Merv and Nonie. Holidays spent with family at the lake left lasting memories for his children. His nephews remember visiting him at the police station and occasionally ending up behind bars when they were little. He coached a hockey team in Ashern but this wasn’t the only sport he enjoyed. The excitement of wrestling interrupted many a conversation at home especially in the later years. He loved taking his kids for a cool dip during the hot Manitoba summers. Bob loved a variety of vehicles, anything that would go faster than he should. Coworkers state that he was a straight forward communicator and encouraged them to do their best. The memories he left behind will endure forever.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all the healthcare professionals (Health Sciences Center, Selkirk Regional Health Center) who looked after Bob during his many hospital stays. We wish to acknowledge with warm regards Dr. Justin Rivard (Surgeon) and Dr. Fred Aoki (Infectious Disease Specialist) for the many hours of care and medicinal wisdom.
At Bob’s request, a small private service for immediate family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be submitted to CancerCare or the Diabetes Foundation.
